Front Wheel Speed Sensor on my 95

I have the drivers side front wheel speed sensor gone bad on my 95. I see them on the internet for like $50 bucks or so for both sides, my Son can get the whole hub with the speed sensor for like $125 through work. I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should get the whole hub and replace it or just get the sensors and have a spare for the passenger side. How much of a pain is it to change the sensor versus just changing the whole hub.
Thanks,
Bob

IIRC sometimes a bad hub is what causes the sensor to go off, you may want to check the hub out good.

x2 - There are a thread or 2 out there relating getting some type of sensor DTC, then not too much later having a hub/unit bearing failure. Think one of the threads was by Turbine Doc.

Expensive bearing to replace, but also potentially nasty results if it fails before you catch it feeling rough, etc. while driving.

It was turbine doc that had one go out and do some other damage. The 1/2 ton hubs aren't so expensive if you compare them to the 3/4 or 1 ton hubs. OUCH!!!!

yeh the light has been on for quite a while, when it first happened TD told me to park it until I could check the bearing. The bearing checked good then and hasn't failed in the year or so since but I think I am leaning toward replacing the hub.

ya for my 3/4 its was 220.54 for one hub and i think they sold me the wrong one like 3 times they are specifice to the diesels i believe they are heavier than the normal 3/4

The best way to check the wheel speed sensor is to measure the resistance of the speed sensor. The connector is located somewhere behind the flap on the fender wheel well. Take it out and put the tester on the wheel side. If there is no resistance then your speed sensor is out. IIRC, it should read around 1 kOhm.

When mine went out, I found one new for about $25 shipped from ebay. Sensor is the same, although in part store they designate the left and the right side.

The hubs are the same.I used a hub off a 97 gasser 2500hd on my 92 2500 hd 6.5. I didn't need the sensor. Same hub.New ones just have a plug in the sensor hole.

The 95 Tahoe I had the sensor would build up rust under the pickup (part that bolts to the hub) and cause the light to go off. Took pickup off and filed the mounting area flat neversiezed and away I went. BUT I checked the bearing FIRST. If its even close to being on the way out change it.
