Need help with a weird problem in my 98 4x4 diesel suburban.
First I should mention that I changed the transfer case to a 241c manual shift from a 246 push button (had to disconnect the 4x4 module and ground out a particular term. when in 4wd, also wired a switch to the front axle actuator to lock and un-lock the axle)
So heres my problem: when in 2wd and turning with the brakes applied the front axle sounds like its trying to engage or lock (LOTS OF JINGLING AND RATTLING)
Could it be the front axle actuator (its still the old 4wire unit)

Thanks

On my 97 I left the 4x4 module plugged in and grounded a wire at the t case indicator switch, with a toggle switch, this gave me a 2wd Lo option. I had the factory 4x4 on dash switch removed though. Probably did the same thing as you, just in a different way. Did you try unpluging the actuator ?

Thanks for your reply.
I havent yet unpluged the actuator but I did lift the front wheels and switched the hubs (as it were) on and off and everything worked smoothly (no weird sounds or binding)
cv shafts are good to.

If it does it only when turning right, the gear could be trying to engage on its own,if the spring is broken,I guess they have one ?

Thanks for the input 6.2 Turbo
I was checking things out yesterday and found that the guy before me changed the left cv shaft with the wrong one (abs tone ring on the cv shaft) so I cut off the tone ring and moved the cv boot clamp over.(both tone ring and clamp were virtually touching the lower ball joint.) so when turning I guess things were touching.
Did I mention I just picked this truck up used---(very USED)
