I'm looking for a free version of some decent anti virus program since mine now is out of date. I'll pay if I have to but something that auto updates daily would be cool. Suggestions welcome.

Nick, check this site out CNET. I have used the AVG and Avast and am happy with both. The AVG have had good luck with either.

On Edit: Both are light on the system resources compared to the others out there....

I use AVG free on all of ours. But, if you're just looking for a scan there's also lots of free online scanners that don't need installation. Such as Trend Micro Housecall, and Eset.com also has an online scanner among others.

AVG Free here as well...the free model requires you update manually, but it will scan on a schedule. Updating is no biggy, do it once a week and it only takes a couple minutes. Small price to pay for a little security...
As in all download locations - don't get tricked. Download ONLY the free model and don't add the extra stuff like toolbars, etc.

Thanks guys. I've been using AVG for several years now and mine was outta date. I updated to the 8.5 version today before I left for work. I for some reason have a tool bar now and I dont want it.

Anything on C-Net is safe to use. I like Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. Free also. Good luck

uh-oh...

Uninstall, Delete it and try again.

As for bugcatchers, Spybot SD is good, Adarare is OK but uses a lot of resources, SuperAntiSpyware is good but the free version is manual, not real-time, Malware Bytes is good but not realtime... Windows defender is good but misses some stuff... none of them solve all the problems. i use 2 ot three on a regular basis, plus a weekly online scan from trendmicro or Kapersky.

Right before my weekly mirror.

AntiWalware Freeware

Hello Nick,

AVG, Ad-Aware AE, Spybot S&D. These three's freeware versions work well, and each has a TSR (terminate and stay resident) protection feature that continually monitors what is executed in main memory.

Because the TSRs run continuously, they take up some of your memory resources. Many users have complained and disabled Spybot S&D's TeaTimer feature for this very reason. After I upgraded my systems RAM to 2.5GB, I can now run AVG and Ad-Aware together without any noticeable slowdown of the system. TeaTimer is still disabled, though. If I had to choose only one to run continuously, I would choose AVG.

MalwareBytes AntiMalware (MBAM) has a freeware version that does not have the TSR protection module.

When working on PCs/laptops that people drop off (I've worked on several with a thousand or so of viruses/Trojan horses, and HUNDRED thousands of tracking cookies/spyware on the hard drive(s)), I use all of the first three above (at the same time if there is enough memory). Then, I run MBAM, which has knack for killing pretty nasty Trojan horses the three have missed or were unable to remove.

Why don't I use MBAM instead? It's TSR Protection Module isn't free.

Very important you update regularly with any of the above and schedule FULL scans rather than the "smart scans."

Regards,
Franko
