A buddy of mine has an 08 F-250 RCLB with the gas guzzling V-10, 9.5' stainless fisher v-plow and 6.5' stainless Salty Dogg in bed sander. He is having traction issues with this combo and i am sure it is the stock rubber. The truck only has 4k on it so it isnt a lack of tread. Problem is Ford as other truck manufacturers do ship this pile with 18" rubber and of course no one makes a decnt tire in this size. Question is can he put on the older 16"wheels from an 05-06 Ford so he can get a better selection of tires and most likely at a cheaper price? Thanks.

Let's take this over to Suspension and Wheels and see what the resident experts there have to say.

I suspect that as long as the 16" wheels do not interfere with brakes or steering components, he will be fine.

Sorry about the brain fart:mad2:. I wasnt sure to post in suspension/wheels being a Ford or put it in the Ford section for powertrain so i gave up and put it in off-topic. Thanks for the move and info. We havent looked to see how much caliper clearance there is yet. We are hoping someone would have done some kind of wheel swap that would know for sure. We could just try a 16"wheel but he doesnt have one to try. I just might give a Ford dealer a call in the parts dept. and see if the part #s are the same through the years. If the calipers, pads and brackets are all the same for the 05/06 then the 16"s should fit on the 08.

I thought Ford moved up to the bigger wheels BECAUSE they went to a bigger brake setup?

That Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo that a lot of Duramax guys like is available in 285-65/18 which is a 32.1" tall tire in 10-ply. The Toyo M-55 Traction Radial (Pinned for studs) is available in 275-75/18 which is a 33.6" tall tire in 10-ply. The Toyo Open Country A/Ts & M/Ts have a few different choices for 18" wheels.

I am pretty sure the thread pitch is different but the rims will fit. I am not positive though as I got out of the Ford business when I had a POS (imo) 6.0

99-03 1/2 run (8on170) 14x2 lugs
03 1/2 -08 run (8x170) 14x150 lugs

99-04 brakes are the same and the backspace wheels all can be used between these years.

05-08 brakes are the same and the backspace wheels all can be used between these years.

Now if you try and install newer 05-up wheels on a 04-down they can see caliper clearance issue's do to having a heavier backspace. Also you end up with the wheel and tire combo sucked in more and the tires may rub the leaf springs.

As for using a older 16" on a new 08 I would say to test fit it because we have never went that route. I know Ford had a 16" for the 05-ups but if it was a 99-04 16" wheel I don't think it will work because of the backspacing.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, this is what i was looking for. I spoke with this fella last night and he said he found a tire which i beleive he said was the Bridgestone Dueler in 18" and studded. Price for the tires with studs was $278 each without tax. I told him he might better buy aftermarket wheels "dealer wants $312 for stock 18" wheels" in 16" if they will fit and run the Cooper Discovery M/S tire i have. I picked up my tires through a friend for $540 out the door and this included a tip. The Coopers have alot of siping and can be studded.
