What would you recommend for the initial upgrades to the engine? I think relocating the pmd will be my first project. I dont really tow heavy or a lot, but I already see I want some mods to bring the engine temp down a bit before even towing with it, not that it will help engine temp, just a random thought.

if you want to lower the temp i would clean the rad first. crap gets stuck in there after all these years so cleaning it will help get the airflow back it once had. making sure the fan clutch engages at 210 or before is also helps to keep the temp down also. you can also upgrade to a bigger fan.

a 4 inch exhaust that you can get from the vendors on this site will also reduce egts and if your really pushing the truck can keep the engine temps down too. i would also suggest braided oil cooler lines because the stock ones can break. also make sure your injectors are up to par and if they have more than 100k miles they need to be replaced with some genuine bosch ones

1st upgrade call me, neighbor :)

I'm down road from you not too much of a drive & I'd be more than happy to spend some time with you, I'm gonna be in Starkville/Columbus MSU homecoming weekend, my boy is going to school there, shucks he knows a little about 6.5s hanging around me so long, last year or so he's driven mine more than me.

What engine temps you seeing, same recommendations as Woody calls for, dirty rad/ac core (externally clogged fins) are prime candidates for high temp, as is bad stat, and even bad fan clutch.

Open exhaust 4" is where I'd go with it as eventually once the 6.5 power Geine is let out it's bottle you'll want to start upgrades.

Downpipe replacement highly recommended especially earlier vintage years, did yours come with a "soot trap" catalytic converter, that needs to come off, Diesels don't get hot like a gasser for exhaust heat to burn off hydrocarbons in cats core and it eventually plugs up BAD restricting flow and upping temps.

Thanks, it runs just under 210 without towing. Not sure about cat converter, need to check and see. Are these fuel gauges horribly inaccurate, or do I have a bad one. It goes past full when filling up. I had about 150 miles when it dropped to just under full last night. Get in it this morning and the gauge is around 1/4 of a tank. I dont "think" I was robbed of any fuel but you never know. I know it runs out just as it gets to red, but not sure whats going on with this gauge.

Locking fuel cap may be a good upgrade to help pin point the issues with the gauge.
I'd run through the diagnostic checklist so you'll know what your starting points are. At least you'll have a base line.

Speaking of gauges, at least run a base line of data readings from a scanner such as engine temps, IATs, etc and run a fuel pressure test as well if you don't want to purchase a set of pillar types just yet.

Past full as in point to the right mirror, 90 degrees, or just a little past full? If the wire or sensor opens up the gauge will point at the right mirror a good distance past full. This can be from a bad ground by the tank on the frame, bad frame to engine ground, bad sensor, or open in the wire between the gauge and the sensor.

Also check the fuel cap. Sometimes when it builds a lot of vacuum, the fuel gauge can go erratic.

That is what happen to mine. Then it fixes itself.

You had my hopes up, but to no avail. That didnt work. I'll have more time this weekend to check it more in depth. Thanks for all the ideas fellas.
