ok. I just put the latest 7.5.5 build 74 software on my desktop. i'm not brave enough to try for the 8.1 and bootblock upgrade etc just yet so i'm stickin with the 7.5 for now.

my question is... is the firmware version still V2_4_72 like it is for version 7.5.4 build 65 ? this is currently on my LAPtop and I want to make sure I get thigns right before I update the laptop.

you are aware that you have to completely remove V7.5.4 before adding V7.5.5. The firmware is different and you have to use EFI Explorer to update it.

Your really better off to bite the bullet and get 8.1. I screwed up at first, but the EFI crew got me though it.

see now that seems to be the issue. I did remove the 7.5.4 from my home pc downloaded the 7.5.5 build 72 which then said there was an update and that brought me to build 74 but the firmware listed is the same as the 7.5.4 build65 thats on my laptop. there is no efi exploroer with ust the 7.5.5 as far as I know thats only with the 8.1
hence my confusion and question. I guess I may just have to get brave. not sure I i'm grasping how not to turn my flash scan intoa paperweight with this boot block thing.

ok. time for me to bite the bullet and update to teh most current software. heres my dilemma. I ahve boot block 2.04.10 and firmware 2.04.72
so as I understand it i'm good with the firmware for the moment. but when I try to use the efi explorer it seems to not want to work with the sotfware. is this because I need to update the boot block to V2.05.08? and then after I get that far I have to update to V2.06.02?

EFI Explorer is a PITA.

I still havent fingered mine out yet. Hence Why i havent tuned my truck or built the other peoples tunes yet.

You need to put the flashscan into dead poll mode by holding ctrl and then plugging it into the computer. Then open up EFI Explorer and then click then hit F5. You will need to update the boot block and then the firmware.

these most recent updates have been a PITA.

I finally managed to get it figured out. yes it is a pain in teh butt , however once you get past the first boot block its easy after that. I Think. as soon as I Get my laptop updated to the latest software i'm gonna go for a run. then try to put how to update in simple terms for people like me that are lost lol

I have it working. i'll try and get something posted tomorrow. its a tad bit late for me

ok. lets see if I Can explain this were the slow people like myself can understand how to do the boot block and firmware updates.
first you have to check which version of the firmware and boot block you currently have. so plug in your flash scan, open the firmware updating program from >start> allprograms >efilive> 7.5> firmware update programmer.
then click status. this will give you your current boot block firmware and other information, serial number etc.

now... assuming you have the latest software of V7.5.5 on your computer you must update the firmware to the following.V2.04.72
IMPORTANT:
You only need to perform this firmware upgrade if you have not already upgraded to V2.04.72 firmware. You must install firmware V2.04.72 before you can upgrade FlashScan’s boot block to V2.05.08.

this process is like it has been through the firmware update programer.
once you do this you can now do the boot block update as follows

If FlashScan has boot block V2.04.xx or earlier, please perform these steps:
1. Program firmware V2.04.72.
2. Use FlashScan’s menu option to upgrade the boot block to V2.05.08.( see below )
3. Program firmware V2.05.20

the sequence is done on the flash scan key pad
IMPORTANT:
You only need to perform this boot block upgrade if you have not already upgraded to V2.05.xx boot block.

Select the FlashScan Upgrade Boot-block menu option using the FlashScan keypad sequence: F4->F1->F4. You will be asked to confirm the upgrade process a number of times as per the following screen captures.

Before the upgrade process can be completed, FlashScan will test the flash memory chip to ensure it is operating correctly. If the flash memory test fails you will not be able to upgrade your FlashScan unit. In that case, please return it to the place of purchase for repair.

BOOTBLOCK UPGRADE

The upgrade process will take about 5 seconds to complete, then the screen backlight will be turned off. The final message: BOOTBLOCK UPGRADE IN PROGRESS DO NOT INTERRUPT will still be visible.

The two orange LEDs will flash alternately to indicate that the boot block upgrade process is complete and FlashScan has automatically entered dead-poll mode.

Dead-poll mode means that FlashScan is waiting to be programmed with new firmware.

now you can use the 8.1 software aka efi explorer to do the rest of the upgrades.

How to program new firmware into FlashScan:

1. With FlashScan already connected, run the EFILive Explorer program by double clicking on it. You can find it on the Windows Start menu:
Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8->EFILive Explorer
If FlashScan is already in dead poll mode when EFILive_Explorer connects, an error will be displayed, usually $0109. That is just the boot block rejecting a command from EFILive_Explorer that was directed at the inactive firmware. Future versions of EFILive_Explorer will deal with dead poll mode more elegantly.
2. Select the [Firmware] tab page; click [Refresh] to read the firmware details. Check that the boot block Version and Date are what you expect them to be (i.e. V2.05.08, and April 25, 2008).
Note: The firmware Version and Date will be N/A if a new boot block has just been programmed.
3. Click on the [...] button and select the desired firmware file.
The firmware files can be found in the folder: \Program Files\EFILive\V8.1\Firmware.
4. Uncheck the Boot block check box.
5. Click on the [Program] button.
While FlashScan's firmware is being programmed a "percentage complete" counter will be displayed from 0% to 100%. Sometimes that counter may "freeze", however the reprogramming process will continue. It should be complete in less than 20 seconds. A dialog box indicating success will be displayed when the programming is complete.
6. Click [Ok] and wait for FlashScan to reboot.

I picked the latest firmware in the list to update to not sure what it was I believe it was V2.05.20, I dont recall
after the firmware is updated the unit should reboot and you can update the license. this goes as follows...

After programming the V2.05.xx boot block and matching firmware (for the first time), a license update screen will appear:

IMPORTANT:
The License upgrade will occur automatically (and only) the first time FlashScan is booted after the new 2.05.xx boot block and matching firmware have been programmed.

The license structures stored inside FlashScan need to be upgraded. FlashScan will check the license structures each time it re-boots. If it detects the old style license structures it will upgrade the license structures. In that case, you will be prompted with the following messages:

ATTENTION
Boot block has
been upgraded.
License will
be upgraded now.
Press [Ok]

LICENSE UPGRADE
WARNING
Do not remove
power during the
upgrade process.
Press [Ok]

If the license upgrade is successful you will see the following message:

LICENSE UPGRADE
Upgrade
Completed
Successfully
Press [Ok]

If you do not see the message above, the license upgrade was not successful. In that case you must return FlashScan to EFILive for repair.
( this is all done on the flash scan module screen )

after this there is one more firmware/ boot block upgrade that can be done through the efi explorer. when you open exlorer an icon will appear in the task bar. click this to open theefi live control panel. go to the firmware tab and follow the directions it will do the final firmware and boot block update.

hope this helps some guys get completely updated. it was nerve racking for me to risk turning my efi into a door stop but reading the directions that come with the software fully and doing a dry run through the process I Got through it. if anyone has an update or finds something that might be missing let me know so I can correct it.

happy tuning!
