May be a dumb question...or even may be a question already asked and I didn't see it, but if my NV4500 needs rebuilt, I'm considering on simply purchasing a rebuilt one (such as http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy-GMC-2500-3500-NV4500-NV-4500-Transmission-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45ed6e6d19QQitemZ300336180505QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_3259wt_1082) - question is - my truck is a 96 3/4 ton with an internal slave cylinder. If I purchase a transmission to replace the old one, can I get one with an external slave cylinder? If so, how do I go about doing it, and if not, why not? Thanks!

As far as I know, the slaves are external.[I could be wrong] Try taking your starter off without removing it[the slave] first. I'd be very cautious about buying one off of egay. What do you do if something goes wrong with it. At least if you have it done locally, you can get in their face about it.

I think 96+ has internal slave. The bellhousings are different on 92-95. 96+(IIRC) same as Dodge. 92-95 ex slave(I like it better)

92-95 was the external slave bellhousing, and the bellhousing to transmission pattern was unique to GM. 96-07 was internal slave, and the trans to bellhousing pattern was a universal one shared with dodge.

so I would continue to look for a 96 transmission, as 97 went to fast reverse, which is one thing I hate!

I have also heard talk of, but havent confirmed, that one can put the low gears (6.31 vs 5.61) in the 96 case. 97 and up wont work, I think it has to do something about dual plane and single plane gears. so I think I am going to look into this, and if confirmed, rebuild the bad trans in the 96 junker into a 6.31 1st and reverse 2wd version that goes in 96 and newer!
