I've been looking at exhausts and I finally got my old truck sold so it's time to do some mods. I've been looking at a 4" straight piped exhaust but I can't help but ponder just yanking the cat and muffler off the stock 3.5" and calling it good enough. It would be way cheaper to do that and would leave me mod money for other things. Thoughts...advice??
I know on my car I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way. I spent $400 on a catback and a year later put a cutout on it that I ran open all the time bypassing my $400 catback. I'm not really looking for every single HP I can get out of the truck as it won't be raced or pulled or anything like that....I'm just looking to free it up a little and improve the sound. Just seems like a smarter move to get rid of the stock muffler and cat and roll with that and use that $260 somewhere else.

If you intend to keep your truck otherwise stock, and are not looking to lower EGTs, then a 3.5" straight pipe will sound better and breathe a little better than stock.

I would think the EGT's would drop just by removing the cat and muffler. Realistically I'm not going to push the truck powerwise much. I'm actually pretty happy with it stock. The power is fine for what I do and I'm a huge fan of the dependability. I already have 1 vehicle to worry about puking engine/tranny parts on the track...don't need 2. :D
Most likely I'll just do a small tune and that'll be about it for a while. I'll sleep on it a few days and see. I just have to sort out the wants and needs. I want a dual exit system but I don't need more than a stock straight piped system. Maybe I'll straight pipe this one for now and save my dual exit system for my next round of mods later in the year or next spring.

If you are going to add a tune, don't forget gauges. And if you are going to add a tune and gauges, then you will want an intake. And you will get the most out of an intake with at least a 4" exhaust...

So how fast the money burns up? :)

Yeah, I'm well aware of that circle......I have $10-12k worth of parts on an $8k car. :D
I actually do have plans for gauges but in the grand scheme of things they're pretty cheap. Everything I've read and been told is that the stock LBZ intake works fine and not to upgrade it. I was going to mod the box though.
