This retainer came from the second pair of lifters(front of the engine being the first set) on the passenger side.

The third lifter(pictured above) has had no retainer around it for close to 2 years now.

Guess i found my ticking.

The first 2 pictures of the small piece were taken a few days ago. That smaller piece of retainer was in the oil pan when i removed it to hopefully fix what seemed to be a rear pan seal leak.

That piece that's still missing from the retainer i haven't found yet. I'm going to go hunt for it now. If i can't find it that head is getting ripped off.

I have never seen anything like that Dave, but if you think you are still missing parts, I would personally go through the motor until I found what your looking for, just for piece of mind. Go the extra distance and do it right the first time. That is my motto. Thanks for sharing the photos.

I'm thinking failure in the casting of the piece. Looks like there is either a stress crack or a nice gouge across the top that could've only been made when the piece was forged. Perhaps contamination in the mold for that piece.

I don't think the lifter spun in the bore but i'm honestly not sure. The lobe doesn't look gouged up, but it's not super shiny either after i sprayed a little brake clean down there to make sure i wasn't just looking at dirt on the lobe.

The polished area of the lifter is larger since it was sitting on the bottom of the bore instead of barely touching it but there's no evidence of a circular pattern which would indicate a "spun" lifter.

It was running on all 8 last week when i test fired it with the Banks kit on.

And to think, if the oil pan hadn't started leaking(since my "can't understand well enough alone" self had to snug the bolts up), i wouldn't have found this.

I just pray the cam isn't damaged. If the cam lobe gets wiped there will be enough metal to take out every bearing in the engine. A replacement cam is around $350-400 for brand new. I"ll buy a Teds 6.2 before i buy a new cam for this engine.

The missing piece may have gotten ground up or it busted into many small pieces. It's not in the head, and it wasn't in the pan either, but since i was doing very frequent oil changes(every 500 miles and a can a seafoam) to try and fix what i thought was a ticking sticky lifter i may have flushed the pieces out. I did get a few "faint thuds" onto the drain pan over the past 2 years this engine was ticking.

Dave there is a junkyard in Somers CT with a low mileage 6.2 in a CUCV. I saw it last week. I don't know what they wanted but 6.2's can be had locally way cheaper than Ted's.

This is true. I just like their warranty. It's basically a guarantee that you aren't getting a pile of shit.

Curious what they'd want anyways. If your up there again and the truck is still there could ya ask for me?

I'd use the engine in my shed, but it needs to be gone through completely since it had rings seized to the bores I'd have to ball hone the bores at the least, if not overbore them. And that's if the walls aren't pitted beyond what an overbore can clean up.

I'll call them but I may be headed over there tomorrow anyway. I need a new dash faceplate for the rolling abortion.

OK sounds good. I just want a backup plan in case this stupid motor goes tits up after i fixed that damn lifter retainer. Considering that big chunk not in the picture is still missing i have a feeling i'm not finished fighting this issue yet.
