o.k. i have a 95 code F. When it is very cold the engine taps in the top. Then when it warms a little it goes away. About 5 minutes or less. Only when the outside temp is below freezing. No matter what if the temp is over 32 degrees out side it does not do it. I checked all the glowplugs also.Earlier this month. . Could it be just cold fuel? I use howes and powerservice also. on every other tank full. Other than the tap, it runs excellent all day long. I am afraid maybe injector problem? Or could it be the fuel heater? Maybe water in the lines that just wont go away? I have had it for 3 years. and it always did it. Even when i lived in s.w. kansas untill aug of this year. It has 157,590 miles on it. I have put 7500 miles on it myself. Thank you

Sounds pretty normal.

Any smoke at start up, during initial Idle or after its up to temp?
Do you know how old the injectors are?

Mine is pretty loud when it is cold, the colder the louder it gets. Once it warms up its fine.
If I plug it in, no extra noise.
Some of it is the timing is slightly advanced 1.42 verses 0.7.
Running power serv the extra cetain seems to add some noise.
Injectors have 50 or 60k on them. (at about half life)

You might have a lifter that bleeds down after shutdown.
With cold weather/oil it may take longer to pressure it up

I would expect a lifter bleed down to 'fix itself' pretty quickly after start up even cold, not take 5 minutes.
Block temperature would take 5 minutes to warm, don't you think?

Ive been having the same issue for over a year, I think its a bad glow plug because if i git is more RPMs it does away. I think its a cold cylinder with poor combustion because its to cold to burn the fuel. I must have had another glow plug go bad because I started having it really run rough when I first fire it up. Once the snow flies I drop the ins off it and park it for the winter so Ill have to work on it then. For now its my daily driver.
