So I'm thinking about either pulling my 6.2 out of my 87 and putting it in my 89 gmc or just putting my GEP 6.5 in my 89. A little info about the truck.... It's a 89 gmc k1500 extended cab short bed it's got tbi 350 in it and 700r4. It's got 300,8xx miles on it and runs like a top and everything is original. I've looked around but can't find an answer. I'm not cutting any of the wires because I like having everything original. I know how to wire the engine up through the harness but I'm wondering about the transmission. I know how to wire it up but I'd rather use the original wiring. My question is would the ECM still lock up the convertor when it needs to? Would the tps still work and would my cruise control still work? Like I said I don't want to cut anything I'd like to have the option to put the tbi engine back in.

Then leave it original!
The gas computer will freak out over missing injectors, etc, and never lock the TCC because of codes like that. You will have to find a diesel setup and see what they used for that year. Your choices are a simple system or a TPS and emissions control computer from a C code 1988 and up 6.2. The 1988+ diesel computer controlled lockup, EGR, and EPR.
The older and simpler system is mostly in the trans, a brake switch and some unlocked with the throttle at 0 - and this could be sensed by the trans cable not a TPS on the IP. Some info here although not a favorite place to recommend: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448088

You can find a diesel truck with a blown engine to play with easy enough.

First thing the 6.2 is going to do is make you rebuild the 300K mile transmission. OD was the last thing to fail on our 88 6.2 before it went bye.
