engine oil filter for fuel?

Is that multi pass effeciency (oil filters usually are)?

iirc the stanadyne is 5 or 10 micron and think its absolute not multi pass.

Oil filter might not be a bad prefilter.

Also fuel filters are also treated or somehow also seperate water not sure if oil filters do this function???

My new sending unit came with a gas sock so i popped it off and will need a filter between the lift pump and tank.

I have a remote filter mount that works with gm oil filters, and a huge surplus of filters to work with it.

the GM Oil filters are rated at 20 micron, and im sure can flow the 15gph the lift pump needs. Im just not sure if there is something inside them that will fall apart with diesel?

this is in addition to the factory filter.

Use the right tool for the job. For example: would you know if the diesel dissolved the cardboard end caps on a Fram oil filter? Your lift pump would.

Nothing wrong with free or 'in stock'. But plenty wrong with 'free' when it messes up something else that costs 10x more than 'free' saves.

My sending unit also came with the gas-style sock installed. Kinda surprising, since I specifically ordered the diesel version. As far as protecting your lift pump, 20 micron will do the job. The filter element won't separate out water, since it doesn't have the water coalescing coating that's designed to do that. To determine if something 'will fall apart with diesel', disassemble one of your filters and submerge the guts in diesel fuel. Let it sit for a week and see what happens. If you don't want to wait a week, you can also call the tech folks at Wix filters (704. 864.6748) and ask if their filter media is similar between fuel and oil filters.

I have been using an off the shelf oil filter on my diesel xfer pump for over 3 years now. Not sure how well it filters the diesel, but it hasn't come apart, and I've never had a related issue in my truck or in my house where I pump the fuel into.

And its a fram.

I have also pumped out about 15 gallons of B100 this summer. Its still working fine AFAIK.

Think im gonna give it a shot, mainly because its free. I have no doubts that it will filter better than the tank sock, and will probably extend the service life of the one in the filter manager.

If you don't wanna shell out $$$ for a new Racor check out junkyard some of the older Fords came with a Racor pre-filter unit,

Also check out Northern Tool for a filter made by Goldenrod designed for Diesel, less than a Racor setup.

Id be concerned about compatability with fuel's solvent properties and the adhesives specified to be used for oil, may be unfounded worry but a concern that needs to be investigated as cost if wrong assumptions are made could be high free now but could wind up not being free.

My prefilter is on there to save the lift pump not filter in the filter mgr though the 10 micron does give the 5 micron on engine filter longer life as well, one thing I like about my Racor it gives ability to easily add an extra fuel heater, multipe hook up ports, and a location to put a vaccum switch to know when a element is getting dirty.

Just as an additional data point, the replacement fuel sender unit I got from LMC Truck also came w/ the std fuel sock.

I could envision the little flapper door in the diesel specific sock possibly being important in a very cold temps/possible gelled fuel situation, so I cleaned the heck out of the original sock, & re-used it.

same for me

I picked up the entire unit from Tractor Supply for around $35. You can get them for either 3/4" or 1" fittings. You also have a choice of either spin-on or removable cartridge with clear plastic sediment bowl.

Yup. That's why my suggestion to dump the guts in a bucket of fuel and see what happens. Wix is pretty specific about different filter #'s for different fluids:
  • 24*** series = specialty filters such as fuel dispensing, coolant, cabin air, etc
  • 33*** series = fuel (gas and diesel)
  • 42*** series = air
  • 46*** series = air (specialty, flat panel, wrapped filters, HD safety filters, etc)
  • 51*** series = oil (lube, hydraulic, transmission, power steering)

I found a NIB Racor 500 filter unit on eBay from a guy that specializes in Racor filters. It has the heater and ports. My plan is to mount it before the lift pump. I run biodiesel year round, and I like the idea of warm, clean fuel hitting the pump. Seems like it would only extend the life and ensure that my fuel flows freely all winter long. The downside is figuring out a place to mount it. The 500-series is a top loader filter that uses a replaceable cartridge, so I gotta have room above the filter to lift out the cartridge without interference. The easiest spot is on the firewall where I currently have a large capacity CAT prefilter mounted. But that won't help my lift pump. Still working on that idea.

Rear sender from RockAuto, and front sender from NAPA both specified for diesel came with the gasoline sock also.

I removed the both of them, as I had a horrible winter last year trying to run cold diesel through the gas sock.

Search PBTXXX on Ebay for great Racor prices. I got a heated 30micron 90gph unit for about 60 bux shipped. Havn't needed to plug the heater in down to 0. The water bowl is the real deal. So much crap/rust/crud/water settles there, and is easy to drain. (I started to re-use a rear tank after a few years, and the old sender was rotten to bits is whats showing up in the water bowl).

X2 Matt. Mine came from LMC. Same deal. I pulled off the sock, since I'm relying on my filters to catch the crud and it's easier to replace a filter than to replace a fuel sock. ):h

I've purchased two Racor units from them. My most recent purchase, a Racor FF500MP came from filtrationdepotonline. His auction had a 'Make Offer' thingie, and I started making offers. We sorta met in the middle. :D Very reasonable and quick shipping. I need to fab a harness with a weather-proof connector, but that'll be easy.

BTW, I brew my own BioDiesel and run it year round. I currently cut it with around 20% pump diesel. This morning, it's 18F here in sunny east TX.   No visible fuel problems. However, the faucets are all frozen shut, so my wash process is at a stand still.
