EGT Gauges and Common Temps

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to buy a gauge set for my truck to put on the A-Pillar(EGT, Boost, Trans Temp, all ISSPRO). I want to make sure I get the right face for my EGT gauge, and I'm wondering what the danger zone is for a 6.5T. My choices are as follows-one is green from 0-900F, yellow from 900-1050F, red from 1050-1500F. Second is green from 0-1050F, yellow from 1050-1250, and red from 1250-1500. The second scale sounds a high to me, but thats why I'm asking.
 
post turbo...unless pre turbo would be a better idea to monitor. worked on lots of these trucks (stock) at gm while they were under warranty, but this is the first one i'm modifying. so some areas are a little unclear to me.
 
I've always heard pre-turbo is the better choice for engine monitoring. Personally I don't like any of those scales mine goes from 0-1500.
 
I thought I read in one of these posts at about 1100 deg egt is the threshold when you start melting pistons.

I was meaning pre turbo.

1100F preturbo is a good place not to go over.

I run a Banks setup and it has the probe down the pipe (Post turb0) and I call it good at 900F

Above 1100 In the exhaust manifold and you are getting right along into the crispy zone.

The booklet that I got with Banks kit says 1050 and 1100 Max now this is a post turbo reading.

I still like the idea of 1100F in the manifold being the red zone.

No sense in melting your little critter.

I like the first gauge range, I usually start backing out of the throttle some around 1000-1100, but I'll run it up to 1200(pre-turbo) for a few seconds.
 
A few, very few seconds probably wont hurt it. (1200F)
Unfortunately there is no good way to know what each cylinder is seeing for peak burn temps.

one or two cylinders could be running hot and be right on the ragged edge of the crispy zone.

Seeing as we are speaking of EGT's and gauges.
Does anyone make a suitable top of dash gauge pod that would allow for 3 gauges to be mounted on the middle area on top of a 95 GMC dash.

Been looking around and all that seems to be popular is the A Pillar stuff and only for the late trucks.

I dont want to buy new wire for my Banks Pyro. There is enough to reach up from under the dash and through a hole in the top into a POD.

The boost gauge is a snap as the tubing is cheap.

I also have a long tubed direct reading Water temp gauge that I would like to install.

The dash gauge was not connected when I got the truck but instead a direct tube reading gauge mounted by the turn signal handle. PITA to see.


Ebay has several nice universal 3 gauge pods for sale. ?????????????????//

Want to get the gauges moved from down below the dash and up to where they can be seen.

There is one that is made for the Dodge trucks. I don't know how well it would mate to our dash though

What you're looking at are two different gauges, designed for different probe locations.

The pre-turbo probe gauge should have colour indicators set at:

Green: 0-1050*F
Yellow: 1050-1250*F
Red: 1250*F -->

Post-turbo indicators are lower, as the heat will be dissipating by then:

Green: 0-900*F
Yellow: 900-1050*F
Red: 1050*F -->

As everybody has already told you, lower is ALWAYS better... Gauges are warning indicators, not absolute safety values.
 
Boy do I feel dumb the pics Jim posted are of my guage. I thought he was talking about different guages that had different scales. Since were talking about this particular guage anyone have any intermittent problems with it. I thought I read a post about it somewhere but can't find it. Something about the amplifier box.
 
wannt know what a "HOT" piston looks like, have a gander at these from 1twisted ones truck, he was adjusting his mechanical IP, got the cover on it wrong after adjusting and it went to 5000+ rpm until it died, resulting in melted precups, piston, injectors, and glows, @ 5 & 6 cylinders

Mount it just below the mounting flange for the crossover on the driver's side. As close to the exhaust manifold as possible is where you want to be, without obstructing the flange bolts.
 
The bung that came with my Sunpro EGT appears to be setup so it goes into the Y pipe?

The one you have pictured appears to have been inserted through a tapped & threaded hole directly into the drivers side exhaust manifold...am I seeing that correctly?

I have a tap set, but no welder...if you know what I'm getting at.
