EGR Rear Disc Conversion

Thinking about doing the EGR rear disc conversion on my Suburban and looking for any feedback from those that already have it? Was going to PM Tim privately but figured would ask publicly instead for more potential feedback. With the following concerns:
Is the existing master cylinder adequate with the smaller drum reservoir, my initial reaction to it is that with calipers a higher volume is needed, spoke with Glen at EGR and he said that existing MC will be fine, volume only being a concern when the Pads are really worn.
Will the current proportioning setup work well with discs all round, aren't factory discs all round more of a 50/50 bias.
Will it indeed be better than drums and an obvious tangible increase in stopping power.
Now I have a 2500 with a semi-floating rear and so am also pondering changing out to a FF rear my guess being that going from 2.5" to a 3.5" wide shoe would also show a marked improvement in braking?

Cheers
Nobby

Hmm same width and perch location for a newer axle? Also what's going to slow me down on an axle swap will be getting a 3.42 ratio with it.

Do you use your emergency brake very often?

I'm just wondering out loud, how well the e-brake will work? With my 5 spd, I really want a functional & reliable e-brake.

I also like the idea of gaining a bit more braking capacity in the back, along with losing a signifcant chunk of unsprung weight in the current brake drums.

I know some of these kits use Caddy El dorado calipers, which I believe had some type of manual linkage to clamp the pads for emergency brake function.

And I think there were/maybe still are some 14blt, 10.5 rear ends that came with factory/GM rear disks (gasser Suburbans maybe) Don't know if these had the separate, small brake bands inside the rotor?

Yes the English origin in me has me always using the handbrake. The kit does come with the E-Brake eldorado caliper function.

Now as to original discs axles I see in the manual the discs all round feature stated in the manual, often wondered what the part number for the MC and proportioning valve for that setup would be and if I could indeed find a from factory axle with the discs on it.

Hey Nobby,

I just talked to Slim Shady he built his own kit, I bought mine from EGR brake, he's in NC I told him to come in and check this thread and share his experience, my setup uses the Caddy caliper/park brake setup that applies with the traditional park brake pedal that came with the truck

Hey Tim,
Thanks for that I am leaning towards the EGR kit as I do not have the time to piece together my own. Happy to pay extra for the ease of the situation, also speaking with Glen at EGR he informed me that his kits now have the disc go on the outside of the axle flange rather than inside definitely a plus in my book.

Tim what is your experience in regards to the upgrade was the improvement obvious and did it effect balance at all?

Cheers

EGR sucks and Glenn sucks.

If you like a product that does not fit as instructed (floating rear axle and the caliper hits the axle mounting U bolts so needs re-clocked in a less than optimal location). Also the calipers are now made in China and neither one of mine worked for an e-brake.

Went to AutoZone and got two rebuilt USA calipers (which need modified from stock Eldo form) and they work fine. Glenn would not take the China calipers back.

Also the performance pads are no better than the premium AutoZone setup. AND one of the pads was damaged right out of the box.

All in all I cannot say enough bad things about EGR. Worst money I ever spent on any car "upgrade". Tech support is non existent.

If you can swap a later model axle out, do it.

Tell us how you really feel Adrian, :D maybe I got last one of their good ones, mine went in no problem, after getting it, I did feel it was overpriced for what I got, I think if doing again I'd go Slims's route and build it myself, not really rocket science.

I was considering changing my brakes to the 13" drums on the back. I've got the 8400# brake code on mine. So, a question for you guys with the Cadillac brakes: Would you want the Caddy brakes instead of the bigger 13" drums if the reason you were changing was to handle 20,000 pounds in case the trailer brakes "blew a fuse"?

I'm not being facetious, I'm about to make the choice.

Mike

Spoke with TSM today and had a good chat. The price is much better $730 for a complete parking brake kit and you can buy from them partially if you wish. They also informed me that they were having issues with the calipers and have since changed their supplier with only 8 total problems in the last 2 years. The issue being not mechanical in nature merely nicks on the seat for the brake hose banjo creating a poor seal.

I am now leaning towards TSM. Would love to hear from someone who has done the conversion how much better the supposed improvement is.

Cheers

Take a look at the conversion web sites. One of them has a kit rated for 3500 duallys. They may also have one properly rated for your truck.

I have been looking at TSM myself. If I ever have the money. :mad2:
