A buddy of mine with a '98 6.5 "s" diesel has egr problems and called me to ask some questions but I searched and came up with nothing.

When his egr is plugged in, the truck smokes and has no power so he unplugged it and it works normal again but his ses light is on.

What kind of help can I give him? Buy a new egr valve? Can he remove it...and what else has to happen for him to remove it?
My truck has no egr so I don't know anything about it.

Thanks guys! :smile5:

Man, EGR was something I never had to contend with. OBD-II systems are a bit more fickle that the OBD-I systems.

Vacuum system ok? Seems to me there is three solenoids on an "S" engine. Solenoids very similar to the wastegate solenoid setup. Could it be the solenoid is stuck at max vacuum and not venting? Just speculating out loud.... WD-40 in the port of the solenoid maybe?

I agree... clean out the solenoid. The EGR is just supposed to peep in and out (when the engine can reuse some exhaust)... sounds like it's stuck open.

Check the solenoid, and check the vacuum hose routing. Wierder things have happened than somebody changing a filter or something and putting the lines on wrong...

Wow, thanks guys. What are the chances of Kevin AND Jim helping me out on this one!

I'll see maybe tomorrow I can open his hood and chack the solenoid out.

What are you dragging me into this wrong stuff for? Starting to sound like my marriage in here....

Do your friend a favor, to buy a new L65 intake for $175 or off a junker and get an L65 PCM out of a junked truck, or a performance reflash for an L65 truck. When I opened my L56 intake for the first time I was appauled at how much of it was EGR.

If the ses light stays off when the EGR solenoid is plugged in, try a test by plugging the line to the EGR pod on the intake with a little ball bearing or other suitable item.

If this stops the issue you may need to test this for a period of time.

Likely the EGR solenoid is stuck open.

EGR skunks up the intake horribly on these things and can lead to huge amounts of soot and carbon buildup in the intake port run ners that can and does fall off and into the engine.

Not good at all.

Long test recommended.

If it were stuck open it should cause issues when vacuum is there or not. So if somehow removing vacuum helps, sounds like there is constant vacuum on the line when there shouldnt be. Goes to a solenoid problem or a hose routing issue.
