Hey guys I was doing the upper plenum gut and egr block which I have been meaning to do since I bought the truck nearly a year ago, and since I recentlly put a TM onand new air intake and was still having a bit of black smoke and turbo lag, and what I found in the intake nealy stopped my heart . When I took off the upper plenum I found on all surfaces of the intake a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick coating of oil and carbon (sorry i dont have pictures as I dont have a digital camera) the upper plenum must have been removed at sometime in the past, as the mystery gasket was missing, allowing exhaust gasses and soot to vent into my intake at all times, which inturn mixed with the oily film from the cdr gasses and built up into an air way clogging coating, not to mention the danger of the crud breaking off and falling into the heads and block, I have since blocked the egr tower with a freeze plug (i was recomended a 45mm but that fell into the tower and i had to pull it out "operation" style with needle nose pliers, and hammer it a bit to open it up and fit snuggly into the tower)and using a small shop vac that would fit into the lower intake, to catch the crud as I scraped it off, cleaned out the lower and upper plenum.

My advice to any one who has an "s" engine, is to block off you r egr tower as soon as pssible and remove the upper plenum web casting to let your truck breath properly, even if you put an improved air intake and Turbomaster you will benefit from this mod. Egr's that are functional still put soot and exhaust gasses into your intake and they cause turbo lag by dropping exhaust gas pressure which as we all know is what spools up the turbo. Just my impression on the EGR system

Wow really, does it make you feel better to crap all over my effort to help inform people? Thats the way the bullies at my son's school act. If you don't have anything positive to say...

That was a bit uncalled for of a response don't you think?

He isn't "crapping" on your efforts to inform people, rather just informing you that this has been both known and covered for a long time now. Its wasn't a sugar coated response but he sure as hell wasn't flaming you either. Just letting you know whats been covered already.

No i dont think it was uncalled for, quite frankly I realixze that this subject has been covered before and that I am not saying anything new but then again most subjects of these vehicles have been covered before somewhere on this site, my purpose of posting is to inform the people who may be new to this engine, who may not know the nuances of searching on this site, and may have put off deleting their EGR like I had done. My response to him was not an intention to "flame" him. But was what he said necessary? was it called for?

Man, dont get riled up for nuttin.I had no intend to flame you:nonod:,but if you would've done some searching you would've found umteen pages dealing with the EGR.

You sounded like you was the first to encounter this EGR issue.
I 'm sorry for not replying like a politician on your first post, but it aint a apollogy.

Have a :cheers2:and a:grouphug:and let it be.
