Economics of an older Burb

Before I bought the 94 Burb, we did some checking to purchase a 2011 Burb.

I have always loved the Burb and never really had a chance to own one. Today as we are much more financially stable, we decided on getting that long time cherished treasure. Yes you do buy more toys as you get older!

In any case here in Canada it seems that in 2011 I can only get a Vortex 6.0..

We had priced one out at about 62 thousand dollars CDN. In a purchasing plan it would of cost me about 1400 a month for 5 years..

When I bought the 97 Burb , I figured that if I put everything in order, even if I have to spend on a new engine, tranny plus labor I am way ahead of the game here.

Plus I do like the GMT400 style..

Given the bad rap on the 6.5TD , the Burb does not have many issues..

If my engine blew up tomorrow morning all it would mean is that it would getting a fresh new engine ...

So I believe that its worth keeping these vehicles going and going, they are tough, most of the engineering issues have been sorted and I also believe that you get keep some coins in your pocket.

Imagine the 95/2000 burb you could build for 62,000 dollars.

There is a company that will retrofit a new dmax with everything needed including trans and all upgrades for 25,000.

That leaves you 37,000 for fuel and minor repairs. HHHMMMM. A better vehicle [no diesel offered in a sub 2003 and up] and money left over for all the fuel and vacations for the duration of the loan on an inferior product that doesn't even look like a truck anymore. [just my opinion]

They have more toys for sure. But the more electronics you have the more they cost to fix.

I will never sell mine. I will continue to upgrade as needed and enjoy the savings. After all they all get old and the newness wears off after about the 13th payment.

62K for a 2011 Burb ? That is crazy. I don't think an escalade is that much. 25K to retrofit ?? For 25K you could buy a hellova nice Truck with a Dmax. For alot less than 25k I could fly in Fermantor, put him up in a 5 star hotel and pay him 100$/hr to he,lp me do it....:rof:

That there is funny I don't care who you are.:rof::rof::rof:

And I bet he would do it for less than that:agreed:

Fly in the Ferminator. I like that. I got extra rooms and sometimes hot airheaded twenty somethings wandering around in bikinis in lieu of Five Star hotels and $100/hr. Might take a little longer though.

Or get Bobbie Martin or RatMan to come help you install a 100% mechanical 6.5 and have no trons to deal with/keep up or leave you stranded,, shucks for this kind of $$$ you could have 2 complete Burbs, 1 to drive and have the other as a spare in case of major problems with burb #1.

An '11 Escalade would be way more than 62k....especially up here in the North...worth every penny....wish I could afford one newer than the 06 in my garage....

A 'slade with a DMAX would be even sweeter......

You guys think 62k is alot a 2011 crew cab Sierra diesel is 76K in Canada!!!

And no I was not going to pay 62K for a new Burb. I bought my 97, in it went for oil change and some work..

The way I worked out my budget is that I am putting my 1400 a month aside for repairs and mods..

As for the newer stuff, I do not believe it is better , it may look sexier, but its just wrapping without substance. The 6.5 TD is not a bad block. Please let me tell you of screwed up vehicles.

I also love Landrovers. Now a 2001 range Rover SE with over 100k is a an engine waiting to crack. Look at the Freelanders, they fall apart at 60K and the good news is that the engine manufacturer is no longer in business, so a car that is about 3 or 4 years old is good for scrap.. The Disco 1995 up to 2001 had the cracking block syndrome and not till 2006 till Landrover actually fix that problem with their new 4.4 Jag block.

Alot of gassers at 200k or so actually die, but we do see alot of 6.5 still working strong at 400K (always in kilometers here) ..

No I firmly believe that the GMT400 burb are the best ever made - a few bean counter cutbacks, which can be easily fixed, leaving you with one hell of a great machine. IMHO of course..

5 months of those payments and you've paid for a P400 long block. Another month, new injection pump, injectors, glows, etc. Another month, Fluidampner, most of the front end rebuilt, new HID headlights. Two more months, new tranny. Another month and a new rear end. Let's see that's 10 months. In the 11th month I could take it and the wife on vacation and get laid in it somewhere in the remote wilderness of Montana.:Justwait2:

Sounds like a plan.

Now your catching on.. :)

Actually my 6.5 is 248K (kilomters) which is about 160k miles. So my thought was to start on a p400 build complete, drop it in at the end of this year and sell a complete 6.5 with all ancillaries. The p400 would cost about 12k complete , which is ten months , get a tranny rebuild and voila ... ohh lets not forget the leather treatment for the interior and some nice sounds to go with it..

Ah forgot to mention. The front end is being rebuilt, new ball joints and other parts, its getting new tires on 17" rims, new brakes pads, a new 4x4 module. I am shopping for 3 gauges on the a pillar.. All the oils have been swapped for synthetic, GL5 on the diffs, new brake fluid, rad flushed , new serpentine. New wiring on battery side, new glow plugs, new injectors (Bosch for both) Also looking to get a good price on a Diamond eye turbo back with crossover shipped to Canada ,and thats it for now....

Will start to source the P400 soon..

For $62K, you never catch up. The interesting part about it is if you want to sell in a couple of years, your loan amount will be a lot more than what you can get the car for. It lost 50% of its value as soon as you get out of the car lot.

With your 97 purchase, even after all the fixes, it will never amount to $62K.
