Has anyone done the dual alternators to there 6.5s yet? I plan on taking my AC out and putting another alternator in that spot. Anyone have any tips?
Thanks

Oh yeah the reason i plan on doing this mod is becaues i have 3 electric fans and 4 hids with the all headlight mod done and i have a bush bumper im gonna be mounting soon with another 4 big and bright lights..... and plan on putting some reverse light's on. So yeah gonna be alot of draw one just the one 100amp alternator i have.

The 3 electric fans better be inside the truck. You won't get enough cooling with electric fans. Upgrade to a better engine driven fan. Just get a higher output alternator.

Nope i got 2 fans on the rad and one on the intercooler. And yes they will be enough cooling for my truck :) . I have done it to my LLY my buddys LBZ and countless gas trucks. I have an extra alternator off my spare 6.5 engine and 2 extra duramax alternaters sitting in the corner that i wanna use.

Guy was running around with no fan on at all with no issues... He had an electric fan too that we hooked up to juice and it howled quite nicely.

Guy you toss that in yet?

If you want to keep the AC you can get one 170amp CS144 alternator. Otherwise you can purchase an upgrade kit to bring your CS130 to 140amps.

:iagree:
The upgrade kit is a good route, just make sure you replace the bearings while you're in there, guess how I know.
I had an aircraft landing light on a IH 345, had a 190+amp maker, and if I didn't rev it up to 2 grand rpm, it would kill it. Kinda like the air horns I added to my Yamaha RD400 back in '79... oops, sorry for the detour.):h

I don't need the A.C the radiatior for the ac is out already so its just a waste sitting there

Good Idea, there's only about 3 days a year you want AC up there, anyways?

Thats how I feel with no AC... Unfortunately yesterday was one of those days, Today being another, and Tomorrow being the 3rd :)

I'll soon be happy I have no AC again. Especially next time I open up my hood.

I love my AC and would spend anything to fix it...:D. My fuel truck needs 1300$ worth of parts and I'm gonna spend it. Fat kid likes AC...

Puts me to sleep....

I can make up a bunch more excuses (lies) for the reasons I'm happy I have no AC. If i had it, I'd use it, and if it was broken, I'd fix it too. Just way too much work for this kid to retrofit a non-AC'd rig with AC.

Are we talking about doing this the hard way or the easy way? If you get the ambulance package parts two alts should be a straight forward deal with OEM parts and you shouldn't have to give up the A/C either. Far as I know, it only works with the newer rigs. Anyone care to back me up or correct the info?

Okay let me make this %100 clear for everyone. The AC Condencer is GONE all the piping that went to the ac condencer is GONE. What ever that thing is that is used to charge the AC on the firewall is called is GONE. Once again AC is GONE and I want to put a secondary Alternater where the AC pump is right now. Thanks for all the sugestions on how i could keep the AC but its to late everything is chopped apart. Now how would i go about wiring a second one in? If any of you guys know.....

The discussion between a larger single alternator and two smaller alternators is interesting. Being a systems guy I like the redundancy of dual alternators, but that may not apply here. And, the fact that it was used by GM in emergency vehicle applications makes it interesting.

The one issue I couldn't get info on is what happens after you install the second alternator. How is it wired into the system? Did GM have some kind of wiring harness or distribution block that I don't know about?

DZZ71, why don't you like A/C? :D

I'm with you. I like the redundancy. Take, for instance, my bucket truck. The boom is operated via 12v hydraulic pump with a large battery. On the engine is a very large, purpose built alternator and a battery isolator.(similar to a camper set up but larger. so the boom can't drain the truck battery but the alt can charge both) If for some reason my alternator goes south, I'm screwed all the way around. I'd rather have two. One for the truck and one for the boom. If one or the other goes bad I can still make it work to drive where ever I need to in order to get it fixed. Plus, two standard alts will be cheaper(not to mention easier to find) than the special one that's in my rig now. As for the wiring on the OEM option, I think it came with a harness, but I don't know much about that. I don't have one yet because my diesel is on hold and my bucket truck is a '95, for which they didn't make that option! Just my $.02

The way I understand it when I was researching for my burb is that for 95-, the option was not available. This is the one where the alt is on the driver side. My burb used to be an emergency and it has 1 high output marine alternator. I am sure they would put 2 alt if the option was available.

For the newer 96+, that option is available. This is the one with alternator on the driverside. I am not sure if GM still sells the bracket or not. I have seen some YouTube video with suburban and truck with 5 high output alternators.

I had a thought this morning, wanted to share it with Y'all before it died of lonliness...

Solar panels. I have a few on my motorhome, and they work great IN THE SUNLIGHT AND CLOUDS.

on the Suburban, load the roof with cells, a pickup cab would only hold one or two, but there's always the hood for a few more.

The ones I buy are about 4' x 1', and come with a regulator for about $75 per.
On the 'Burb, I wonder if I could hook an electric motor to the serp belt and push the engine, letting it work less for the "free" electricity... ah, brain farts!
