All:

Just finished rebuilding and installing my engine to include a new IP and remote PMD with cooler - which came with a #9 resistor.

It will start quite easily even in the cold (I am in Ohio), however, it white smokes terribly until warm.

Also, I have the following three codes that I am unable to clear:
34 - Injection timing stepper motor fault
56 - Injection pump calibration resistor error
88 - Top dead center offset problem
I tried to clear the DTCs using both GMTDScan and the pedal method and they instantly come back.

I started with the IP straight up and then knocked it toward the driver's side just a hair to get it to start easier.

Questions:
Is the #9 resistor a source of my problems?
Do y'all have any suggestions on my situation?

Get it above 170* F, clear all the codes and do a Time Set then a TDCOset relearn. That should fix your problem.
 
NVW, I gladly would but I can't get the SES light to stay off.

Even while running, I turned the SES light off with GMTDScan and it popped right back on within about 1 second.

Can't do a time set or TDCO set with the SES on.
 
Code 34 is an IP code but I have a pmd that will also trigger it, I wonder if the new pmd is maybe not so good. Maybe try putting in the old resistor and see if you can clear the codes.
 
I think what Leo is trying to say is that if you don't get it up to temp you can't do the TDCO. If your coding because of TDCO your going to have to get it up to temp first and maybe clear codes manually without the engine running and then try doing TDCO instantly when it starts. Not all codes will stop it from being able to do a TDCO.
 
Check wiring for issues. Then check the resistor for an ohm reading - may have to do it in place as removal is difficult. IMO it is not seeing the resistor due to wiring issues or a defective resistor. The other codes can be separate or related. It only needs to see the resistor once in 50 key cycles or during the time set.
