I really have tried to read and follow the threads on timing the OBDII vehicles.

Apparently it's over my head.

Could somebody point me to an appropriate step by step thread for timing after pump &/or timing chain and gear replacement.

From what I can tell I am at 3.5 degrees. Is there more that need sto be done now. I get lost when I get to the TDOC learn stuff.

I know there is something I missed or am just plain not comprehending.

But then I'm not exactly a computer guru.

And my eyes are a little extra fuzzy making it hard to read and comprehend greatly.

I just read some more and don't know anymore than when I started.

Is there somebody nearby that i could take the Suburban to that could educate me and check the timing for sure?

Mods, Can you fix the thread title for me?

I have no idea. I'll have to ask.

How much does a scanner cost & what would a guy want to buy? & where would I buy one?

what scanner are you using?

I get extremely frustrated not knowing for sure it's done right as I didn't see every step taken. That's probably my fault but I don't like to crowd a guy when he's doing work for me.

Save yourself the frustration and take it to a dealer. They usually charge an hours shop labor to do it with a tech2 then you know it's right. AFAIK the only scan tools that can accurately set tdco on an OBD2 is Carcode(I have it, PIA to use) AE and a Tech2. The older Snap ON scanners don't read it right. No one has had any feedback on whether the Solus works or not. I am going to try to get one of the mechanics at work to hook his to my Burb and see if it matches carcode. There were some really good threads over at DP from GMCTD and Texas Diesel Guy about how it all works. Great stuff.

Its pretty simple when you get to it, if you already knew how to install the IP, meaning how to get to the nuts to loosen and tighten.

1) initiate TDCO relearn from scanner or perform Key On Key Off procedure
2) check TDCO with scanner
3) Turn IP in desired direction and repeat (more negative to drivers side, more positive to passenger side)

There is more stuff to do if you want to do the Timeset feature, but you dont have to do it. Its just pressing buttons and you need to know where the buttons are. Its kinf of normal to set timing with the engine warm and without any EFI faults.

11 seems high for desired and 3.5 is base afaik. I know guys running a heath tune see 11 but I didn't see that in your sig. I see about 8-9 on my Burb with stock tune. I see 11 on my Dually with Heath.
