Drop fuel tank or lift bed to get to lines

I'm getting a code 35 and need to check/replace the rubber lines that come off of the tank. I was thinking I would just lift the bed instead of dropping the tank. What do you guys think? The tank has about 16 gallons of fuel in it. I figured it might be nice with the bed off as far as hose routing. Also can I just use regular fuel line or do I need a certain kind for Diesel fuel?

I have heard of people doing it that way. I would say depends on how rusty your bed bolts are. Could give it some Chassis black while your in there.

If it was me I would lift off the bed. It is only a couple of bolts and the tail light wires and two people and it is off. It is not that heavy!

Dropping tank isn't hard either, if doing by yourself tank needs to be empty, as sloshing fuel makes it awkward, 2 guys & floor jack if you have fuel in the tank

Or drain it first with a pump or lift pump via t-valve.

In salt belt your bolts and straps may never go back on, so may be more expensive to drop tank, if bed is easy.

If taking off the bed i'd get a gallon of rustproofing frame paint and paint everything under the sun with with. Including the new FSU you're installing.

Seems nothing rusts faster than that.

The FSU you ared referring to, is that the piece that fits in the tank with the metal lines coming off of it? I'm hoping I don't have to replace that, I hope to just find a problem with the rubber lines.

Fuel sending unit installs in the top of the tank and contains the fuelgauge sending unit also.
Somehow I got the impression you were changing that as well as the lines. While you have access I would definately clean it up And anti seeze or oil it with heavy oil pr some other kind of protectant. I've ruined fuel tanks trying to remove the FSU's

Jr, Thanks for the info. I hope I get lucky when I get in there. The problem I am having is a code 35 and am hoping to find a problem with a cracked hose allowing it to suck air. Also have noticed a little bit of diesel smell when exiting the truck along with a little longer than usual cranking time before it starts. I guess I will find out when I get in there.

FWIW I NEVER notice diesel smell. I have a nose that can smell truck fluids a mile away too.

Perhaps with a flashlight and removing the driveshaft you can stick your head up there and find the wetness. Where theirs diesel stink, theres wetness sure as the sun in shining for the first time in 3 weeks here.
