Do you remove the injector lines when replacing IP?

I would like to start by saying that this is a royal pain the the butt!:WTF:
I have read that you are supposed to take the lines loose from the injectors and remove them to do the R&R. Does everyone do this?
I have heard of people doing this job in a few hours. They must be working on a much simpler truck than mine. I have almost everything out of the way as I tackle everything I can think of while doing this. My biggest issue right now is that if I am going to finish pulling the lines there are two heat shields in the way on the turbo side. One particularly. It is the one close to the head that seems to wrap down between the runners on the manifold. If I really need to pull all of the lines can someone tell me how that darn thing comes off? It's the one you can see just below the valve cover.
Thanks.

There are 2 small hex head screw that hold it on, yours look like they may be off. On the bottom there are 2 clips that hold it in alignment. Pull up on it and when it is free jiggle it out of there. It can be a PIA.

When you pull the IP either label the lines or leave them attached to the IP, then transfer them to the new IP.

Yeah. I already pulled the scews. It just feels really tight so I assumed there were more screws hiding somewhere. It's still gonna be a pita to get those lines loose behind the turbo. I am guessing most folks just flex them out of the way?

when I say flexed I don't mean that I bent them to the pont that they would stay out of the way. when the IP was ready to come out I used one hand to flex the pipes back while I used the other to remove/install the IP.

NO don't bend these pipes because they have a special coating inside them and if this coating cracks and loosens. You will regret it Be Warned...

To get at the bottom two lines on the IP I removed the harness (boot and two wires) from the fuel solenoid. I took an old box end 12 pt wrench 19mm I think and ground it to make a line wrench. You have very little room to loosen/tighten lines. And yes that shield should pull up, their are 2 tabs that slide into slots, PITA but possible. I did take a couple of the easy upper pairs of lines off the injector and just loosened others.

just replaced my injection pump minutes ago, yes heat flange takes some pulling, I took me 5 hours total, replacing valve cover gaskets so i had to remove injector lines completely, but no problem, easy, good luck
