Well the block is at the machinest getting takin .030 over to clean out the rust. on ganna cost $150 for the machine work he is getting me the rebuild kit for $775 barrings, oversized pistons, rings, and gaskets

sence i am doing a full on rebuild should i spend the extra $150 and have the valves reground as well? either way i am going to put new valve guide seals in.

Even though I don't have them ground I voted yes . The reason is that they need to be checked for cracks and flatness. All springs and guides can be checked also. The having them squeeky clean is a bonus. It took me the better part of a day to disassemble ,clean, check for flatness and reassemble with new seals. $150 is a good price.

:iagree: If every thing else is redone, might as well do the heads. At least you'll know they're good.

Mine all had a huge groove worn on the valve were they seat. If yours look good they should work, I'm guessing they are bad and need reground, just make sure the machine shop checks installed height as it will come up higher changing valve lash. I'm not running seals just an oring on the stem like the old 350s did. I'm not sure about sealing all the oil off on the exhaust valve.

The installed height is part of any valve job on a non ajustable valve train. The positive control oil seals on the exhaust valves keep the exhaust from going in the crankcase as well as keeping the oil where it belongs. Gassers and diesels came from the factory with them in the 90s.

YESSSSSSSSSS do the heads even if its only a good clean and lap the seat.

Mostly get them clean, look for cracks (Magnaflux) and lastly have them pressure tested.

Most shops have plates that they can bolt onto the heads with a rubber seal then pressure the coolant passages and dunk the heads to check for any little pinhole leaks or tiny cracks that will foul things up

Check the precups for cracks in and around the port area. Any crack in a precup port that crosses the fire ring (or even close) is a no go.

Replace any bad cups.

Check for flatness . The springs usually dont give much issue on these heads.

Biggy is to be sure they dont have any leaks. Many heads will have cracks between the valves but those dont hurt in most cases unless they leak.

The cracks between the valves can be repaired by reaming the coolant passage and installing a bronze sleave (Valve guide) into the hole and then installing a new cup plug.

Actually this fix does not deal with the crack itself but instead assures that it wont leak into the coolant passage.

If the heads turn ugly, Clearwater has good new ones very reasonable.

$670 for a set delivered.

Any time rings are done, heads should be done. On ANY engine. Good point about the new ones from Clearwater Missy. Have the shop quote (ballpark) the head rebuild before he starts. New might be cheaper in the long run.

any recommendation on brand of valves??? i have 1 head off right now and getting valve work done.
