I built my own engine oil primer/preluber tonight. I used a oil pump drive from a parts motor. A vacume pump or engine speed sensor from a 6.2 would also work. The drive I used was on a 95 engine. 97 is different.
The shaft of the drive is hollow so I took a 5/32 welding rod, stuck it in the hollow shaft to knock the cap off the drive. Then I took a 1 1/2 in #2 phillips screwgun bit and drove it in the hollow shaft[tight fit]. Then a put a couple of small tack welds on it to the shaft to keep it there good. Then I put a couple of flat washers on the top to deflect oil coming from the top shaft bearing/bushing.Then I slid a o-ring on the hex shaft of the bit for good measure. Then drilled a 5/16 hole in the cover where the centered dimple from driving it out was. Tapped the cover back on and off to the grinder. I put the new tool in a drill and spun it while grinding the teeth off the gear. I finished off the teeth on the top with a hand grinder. Cleaned it up and done.

Wow, im going to need one of those this summer to prime my engine. Where do you stick that thing in the block? DOes it go in the rear where the fake distrubutor cover is? My dad just made on to prime his 455 pontiac, will his work on mine??

It's a oil pump drive the same as what's in your engine. Run it clockwise with a drill to get oil to all parts of the engine before start up. Just pull your drive out ,stick this in and run the oil pump. I should have taken more pictures but it went together pretty fast[20 minutes].

I just use a copper sink drain tube with an 0 ring underneath the flange.[ fits perfectly in the bore] and a socket with extension to drive the hex shaft.

Got any pictures. I can't get a picture in my head of what you are discribing.

Cant post pic,Wife and doughters went to meccico, took dig camera along.

You know the copper draintube ,first thing underneath a kitchen sink that sits between the sink and the trap. its got a flange on the one end,its about 1 1/2 in dia x 4" long.
it fits just snug in the pump drive bore to block of the oil gallery to the lifters. a square 0 ring under the flange will seal the top,and the pump drive clamp will hold it down.
Works for me.

Sound cool, I still can't picture it. I'm sure its one of those, Oh damn I see what you mean as soon as you see it things.

I would assume you positively attach the socket to the extension?

You assumed correctly.common sense apply's as usuall.
You would'nt throw a anchor overboard without a solid knot in the rope either would ye.
