I have a GM manual on disk that has many models, but only the engine & transmission for my 1996 GMC.
It has the full manuals starting at 1998 (HVAC, body, suspension, brakes, lighting, etc).
I thought those models didn't change much, but if anyone knows of major changes between those years (ignoring engine & tranny), please let me know. I don't have any work planned, I'd just like to make a note of things to watch for, should they come up.

h/o cooling system on 97+, also oil squirters on pistons, if equipped EGR system on 97+ includes MAF, theft deterrent on 97+, those are ones that come to mind right off hand, I have a set of 98 GM paper manuals if you get in a bind we can share notes if need be.

Thanks, but all those things, except perhaps the theft deterrent is covered in the 1996 "engine" section. Pretty much anything directly connected to the engine & tranny is covered -including cooling, all sensors & engine electric, starter, turbo, etc.
What is NOT covered is the body, interior, brakes etc for 1996. I do have all those things for the 1998 models, though, so I was just wondering what might be different on my '96.

I have a set of 94 manuals as well, body stuff did not change IIRC until 2000, so between my 94 & 98 manuals we should be able to figure it out with you.

with exception of OBD-II in 1996, IIRC major changes if any were in 6.2/6.5 world 1988, 2000, and multiple changes to Dmax years from 01 to now

Thanks for the answers. It sounds like the 1998 manual will be fine for my 1996, so that's good to know.
The disk I have has 1980-2004 GM models, but up to 1995, it has only service bulletins, 1996-1997 has bulletins & engine & tranny manuals (+related systems), and 1998-2004 has the complete service manuals. That's for the trucks -I haven't really checked out the other GM brand models, but they are all listed.

ebay for older, and possibly some new found at www.helminc.com, all data DIY isn't exactly factory manual at least not on my Villager's subscription it wasn't a real factory manual like the Helm manuals are.

As I said, I've never used them, so I don't know what they are exactly. I just assumed that they were the factory manual. The site says Information taken directly from Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) service manuals. I assumed that meant they were exact copies, but I guess you could still say that, and not be an exact copy. If that's the case, it's pretty misleading. Rather sneaky advertising.

Better than a Haynes or Chilton, but not as good as OEM manual from my experience, but very good if you want to pay subscription year over year, best though is to find factory manual ebay or other used book seller, as I believe helm is no longer carrying the earlier manual years.
