Hello,

I was wondering what most people considered the best design for a diesel muffler. Most people like a straight through, but what if youre looking for a quiet ride?

what design features should be avoided:

chambered
baffled
perforated tubes
insulation material

I was looking at a 3.5" straight through pipe with perforations into some insulation material. Does diesel particulates essentially make these not effective?

Or a triple chamber design, one inlet chamber and one outlet chamber, connected by multiple perforated pipes through the center chamber, but no insulation material.

MBRP here is one of the most popular. I'm running it and have on previous trucks as well.

I dont think real diesel mufflers have any chambers at all. They're all basically straight through designs, with louvers in them designed for the air to run over them, not into them.

I run the MBRP muffler also. I like the sound. It's not to loud at all.

I find my MBRP a little loud... kids can't hear the DVD player on trips...

I was told though that you can reverse the MBRP muffler (from that pic) with the louvers facing forward to quiet it down some with no loss in hp...

I clamped mine down too tight, so now it won't come apart to flip it around...:(

If you use stainless band clamps next time it will come off easier.

CORSA is what got my vote. Roll the windows up and turn the air on and you don't even hardly hear it. Roll em down and get on it and you'll hear it echo off everything as you go by. It is a straight through design, but uses tuned chambers in the outside of it to reduce the noise. It works pretty good, I think Nick would agree as well that it is pretty quiet when I wasn't gettin on it.

Ferman, yours was surprisingly quiet. I couldn't believe it.

LB7'S arent exactly the quietest engines out there either. Those compared to an LBZ or LMM and you'd think you're driving a Sherman. ):h

About reversing the mufflers, I heard the exact opposite of what you said. You can always get a resonator and put it in there. Its nothing more than a little mini muffler.

Nick at NorCal told me that...so who knows?

If my stuff wasn't locked up so tight with the standard clamps...I'd have put a resonator on already...

I have a resonator on mine to keep it tame. Its not loud to begin with so I think if anything, it eliminates any drone from happening.

I still think my 04.5 LLY sounded bad ass with MBRP. It didnt have that LBZ/LMM turbo hiss at all. Just deep and throaty.

soon as she's running 100% again...(rebuilding that other motor is going to be pricey...but it will be much more stout...:D)
I'm going to dynamat the truck and get a resonator cut into it...

You can see the placement of the resonator in the first one. Just a little mini muffler and it goes right where the cat was.

mine never had a cat so i just need to have it cut in in the pipe that goes from the muffler up to the where the cat would be...it's one piece so it will have to be cut...
