did gm put a N/A 6.5l in vans in '96? also when did gm start using the HO oil pump? the block is a 506 casting.... if it was N/A, what are the chances it has anodized pistons? also when did gm start using the HO water pump?

I can help with the water pump it was mid year 96. It certainly wouldn't suprise me if they used N/A engines until quite late but I don't know

The HO oil pump came factory on all 506 blocks, so starting in 97 possibly late 96, until current.

My mid 96 has the HO water pump and dual stats factory. It was hit or miss in 96 it seems. For example the HO WP, dual t-stats, and round air filter box were all started in 97. my 96 had the HO WP, dual stats, but the old style flat airbox from the factory.

Not all 96 had the dual thermostat or HO water pump. If they did, may have been very late. What is the build dates on your trucks AK and Dave? It will be on the door jamb sticker, top right I think with a month and year.

i guess i will know soon enough, just bought a 1994 3500 gmc van complete for 500 bucks, went yesterday and dug beside the pass door to get in to check...( we still have 4 ft. of snow here) looked at the back of the block, 506, the PO says he parked it 3 years ago after it started blowing white smoke.....

i am interested to tear it apart and see what the problem is... i hope it is just a gasket or maybe injectors are finished, so i can get the truck on the road and use it..... it is a PIA with only one truck to work.... if it is half-assed good she will get cleaned up, gaskets, injectors and pump, and go into service..... i think i will call the motor the "506 crack-o-matic" LOL

mine says 03/96. I guess that rules out early/late. I wonder if it was diff plants?

could be different plants received the upgraded WP and stat setup at different times. I"ll check the build date on mine in a few.

I can tell you that the HO WP was factory on mine and so was the dual stat housing. My pickup was a fleet truck, and judging by the typical 6.5 issues it had i don't think anything was done but typical fleet maintenance.

Lou's truck is 3/96 prod date (brooklyn tow) and he has the 2 stat and HO waterpump when I changed his waterpump a long time ago, when he first got the truck. Not sure about the flat or round air filter.

BTW i'm Lou's mechanic friend and NOT a deseil mechanic, but a pretty good wrench turner. so between him and my wreching skills we get by ok. We are having a ground issue and wanted me to see some threads about it. he is always telling me to go on to this site to learn something.
He seems to know alot about this motor, and said he it was all because of the people from this site and some other old site, he speaks very highly of you guys, he calls you guys family and his brothers, and he has the answer everytime I ask him a question about what he has me wrencing on. Lou is a good guy and even lent me a loptop to get on here, he even made me get a user name and told me to become a member about a year ago, the last time I was on here

anyway, just wanted to reintroduce myself and do some searching because this stalling problem is killing him. he calls it, the wait to start GHOST. he has me cleaning grounds 2 and 3 times

Sorry about my typing skills, my wrenching is quite a bit better.

Let's get crack-a-lackin!

Booooo

FWIW Build date on mine was 1996-01-11. OSHAWA,ONT TRUCK PLANT, Single T-Stat, non-HO Water Pump and I couldn't say about the K-47 as it had the SS Diesel intake and cone filter when I got it. Have to assume it was the Square unit though.

well, it is lookin pretty official.... pulled the pan on our $200.00 599 block saturday night and found heavy cracking in the webs, and the main bearings full of metal... also found a problem from the PO, seems maybe when he was in doing some work, forgot to put the cam bolt in for the gears, which let the cam ride forward and eat about a 1/16 off all the front facing sides of the lifters, realizing the problem they cut a notch in the timing housing to put another bolt, so it is lookin like we are leaning heavy on this N/A 6.5l to be the go-to motor...

well, here is a little update on our N/A 6.5l "506" motor.... cut the front off the van and started stripping the acessories off to pull the motor... when i was taking out the flexplate\torque bolts i was turning the motor and came up against blockage, so i turned back the other way, same blockage... pulled out all the glows and discovered about a half a cup of water in number five, and it still wont turn past yet, thinkin maybe a block of ice still in there:nonod:

anyways it is all ready to pull tomorrow, last night we were taking off the intake to make extra lifting space, i was just doing the final cleanup of tools when i got to lookin at the valley, it has the port for the oil sensor there, and the pad is cast for the center mount turbo, but not drilled.... the suprise was the "141" cast on the sides of the valley..:WTF: it was cast on may 2, 1996..( E-2-96)... and on the drivers side of the block it has "506" cast, has anyone ever seen a block with 2 different casting numbers? tonight i will snap some pics...:agreed:

Regardless of cooling system, I think all 96 year came with square/Flat panel air box.......JMO

2 Cents

X2 never seen a round box on a 96. Mine has HO cooling stock.
