Data Link Port

Hi all
1995 Burb 6.5L TD.
I'm replacing the key fob for my vehicle.
It only opens the door locks.
The "data link port" is different than the one's I see when looking for re-setting directions.
The ones I find are 16 hole and mine is a 12 hole.
The directions on the 16 are insert a wire in #4 and #8
But before I cross wires and start blowing fuses?? I want to make sure I cross the right holes.

Thanks

Not sure that the key fob and data link port talk with each other, but to answer the question . . . A '95 should have an OBD-I port which IIRC only has 12 pins and the pin-short procedure only works on the OBD-I, so just make sure the procedures is for the OBD-I system.

Just curious, is there a reason to have the computer display error codes?

Don't now about the error codes??
My code reader only works on the gassers.

Usually I can tell what's wrong(burban) by the way it sounds

Your saying you can't lock doors with key fob? should have nothing to do with data link?, but I'm tuned in to learn.

X2

I swapped out the entire harness between a truck and a tahoe (had the whole dash out) And I never located the key fob receiver...... there were a couple components that I wondered about, but could not find a picture of one to compare to or anything. I need to do some learning here or else my key fob is not going to work anymore.

And exactly the reason I am curious about why we are looking for codes.

When my fuse to the PCM blew, IIRC, the fob worked just fine while the computer was 100% dead.

But this was in my Burb with OBD-II, so I am always open to learning something as well.

I never said anything about reading codes?? You did!
The data port link is where the new key fob is programmed.
The directions say to jumper #4 and #8 on the 16 pin port.
My post said I have a 12 pin port and was wondering what ones I jumper to reset the fob.
I thought someone might know if I still jumper 4/8??

Somebody link an answer with your post at Diesel Place.

Did you check it???

Actually, when I did it a long time ago like more than 10 years, I found the answer on Youtube.
I forgot how to do it, though.

yea.... I was kinda chuckling at the direction this thread was going..... At any rate if you do find an answer, please post the results cause this appears to be an area not too many folks know how it works

The only key fob I reprogrammed was on a 2000 gasser burb, but it didn't have anything to do with the data link port

Saw the reply over on DP
Haven't had time to get to it yet.
As soon as I figure it out I'll get it together and put a post up explaining how.

Yeah, when I bought my 98 Burb, the dealership only had the one key for it. When I got back home, I went to the local GM stealership to have them run the VIN and tell me if it had came originally with Remote Entry and/or Security. It had Remote, but no Security. Sooo, I paid WAY too much (almost $100!) for a genuine GM fob for the Burb (3 button - Lock, Unlock and Rear [cargo doors]) and another $75 labor for a mechanic to "program" it!

Fast forward a couple of years. I'm laying on my side under the Burb looking at something or another and I hear a crunching noise from the fob on my keyring hanging on my carabiner - the case broke in half on the fob (yeah, I know, take off the carabiner before crawling around under the vehicle!). Sooo, being the cheap ass I am, I went onto eBay to look for a replacement fob on the cheap, since this one broke by the ring hole and now the back would pop off easily and the battery and circuit board would fall out. Found complete replacement OEM fobs for $17 and up, or just the case (minus the circuit board) for $3 - $10. So, I ordered three cases, transfered the circuit board over, and now have two emergency back up cases just in case. When I bought my four volume 1998 GM Factory Service Manual for the Pickup/Burb and read how quick and easy the learn procedure was for OBD-II vehicles and that I paid the stealership $75 to do 2 minutes or less of work, well, lesson learned!

Thanks JMJNET.
I looked on U-tube and didn't find this one.

Took all of 2 min.
THANKS!!!! to everyone who answered!!
