has anyone here had the cracks between the valves repaired with the little sleeves that go into the tunnel you will drill out under the cracks? the sleeves have O-rings on each end of them. the local cyl head service swears they work. I have one head (turbo side) that has cracks. thanks
andy

Cracks between the valves that are like yours is OK to just run them like they are (according to my machinist). I had the same thing on the 93. He would have put the dowel kit in, but said its ok to run them. So, I did and never had a problem out of them. No telling how long they were cracked before I took them to him anyway and the engine ran just fine.

What was the problem that you are rebuilding? Got a picture of your crack? (left myself open...)

I think the parts are $11 a crack + $20 labor. got three cracks on one head. I also got another '94 6.5 that has got compression on the wrong side of a piston & it could have a good head on it. I plan on removing all the trim on that engine & transferring over to a military 6.2 anyway.

engine still ran great, 246k miles. I was installing a new clutch & it dropped oil / fuel / coolant in my eyes once to often & I got mad & pulled engine out. rest is history!

When I discovered my cracked heads it was because the glow plugs had swelled. I had to remove the heads to get to them, so I figured might as well rebuild the engine. Truck ran great before and after, with cracks.
BTW I make a special tool for pulling GP's with swollen tips now.

Wear those safety goggles under the truck like you see in the lab. Keeps lots of dirt and other fun stuff out of your eyes and saves pulling engines to fix leaks.
