So I just got my 97 K2500 with the 6.5TD on sunday. Its my first diesel ever. I know diesels make a lot of noise but when I got it I could tell something on the front of the motor wasn't right and was making to much noise. It gets louder when the A/C Compressor kicks on so I naturally thought that was it and went ahead and got the truck. I put the truck up on a lift today and noticed the rubber in the crank pulley is broken away from the center of the pulley. Could this be the cause of my noice? Its not the A/C Compressor, it just increases when the compressor comes on due to the extra tension on the belt. Please help me guys, I love my new truck and I dont want it to be messed up.

What exactly am I looking for on the HB? I'm changing the pulley tomorrow night. I don't plan on driving the truck again until I do. Its been making that noise for the 100miles I've had it for and probably the last 400miles the previous owner drove it.

The HB has the inner part on the crankshaft separated by rubber to the outer part. The rubber should have an even amount of protrusion between the parts.

The pulley is likely your noise, it would have been clanging with rpm changes.

Got the pulley changed today, it was totally shot. The HB looks good from what I can see. Fired the truck up afterwards and it sounds great. Much better. The only thing that gets me is the new pulley came with a key like for a keyway on the crank but theres no keyway on there anywhere that I could find. I didn't see a old one fall out anywhere either. Is the key for a different application?

Ha so I'm not the only one that got a woodruff key with the crank pulley. I just put a new pulley on mine this afternoon while changing the waterpump had had the key in the box. Did you get urs from advance auto? Dorman part?

Yes sir. I got mine from advance auto and it is a Dorman piece. I dont have the part# on me. I'm guessing you didn't use the key either.

I would take the Dorman part back and get one from the dealer. Unless you enjoyed changing that part. The Dorman parts do not last long, search it on here for pics of them failing quickly.

The woodruff key is if you pull the HB. It should be. Replaced each time.

There isn't a pulley or balancer that doen't come from China, these days.

Keep a close eye on the pulley. Mine lasted a little over 2 years.

The HB is important. If its disturbed, reinstall it correctly. See my garage, the "6.5 Carnage" album to see the results of F'ing it up.
