I desided to tear down one of my parts engines. Of coarse I was optamistic that the block could be salvaged. The engine is a 94 "599" block. The story was he was just hauling a load and it went bang and when he stopped all the engine oil was all over the engine compartment. This engine had been recently "rebuilt". I did salvage the heads and manifolds. Crank and cam looked good also.
Cracks on the sides of 2 of the main webs, crack along the oil pan rail near a 3rd main and chunks out of the bottom of the cylinders on #1 and #2[I think from previous blow-up]. Cracked piston on #7

The chunk out of the cylinders aren't really a no go on their own. There are places the casting goes higher up the bore than that. I think the crank had broke causing the rods to hit the cylinders. Crank was replaced and block not checked for cracks.Broken crank usually means broken block. What I don't get is the gash in the piston.PO claimed it was not overheating in the least. Maybe too tight clearance piston to cylinder?Or just bad piston?

getting no luck from the bargain blocks. Makes the hunt for good blocks that much more challenging, and a good reason you see new ones still being made.
