Hey guys. Im in the middle of a water pump swap. Had green coolant in the cooling system. A friend of mine gave me a couple gallons of purple Detroit coolant. Will it hurt if the little bit of green left in the block gets mixed with the purple? Radiator is out so I can clean and flush it good.

I was told from the mechanic I started my apprenticeship with, that one shouldnt mix different types of coolant as the different compounds in them may/could react with one another?

Why not just flush out the block at the same time? Then you wont have to worry about mixing coolant and will start out with all new.

X2 Flush it. I know if you mix the orange that came in my 97 with green it turns to jello.

Don't use the big rig coolant. Make sure that purple coolant is not for big rig like 18 wheelers.

Not sure why but that is in the owner's manual.

I guess I should read my manual as I have been using the HD purple since 05.

Why not to use "big rig coolant"? Because then you will not return to purchase from dealership. The other coolant is made to a higher content of nitrate that is required for sleeved engines to extend cycle life. It also has (cant remember name) same substance as water wetter and water based cutting fluid that increases surface tension for better cooling.

I have run it in different vehical s with good results, but I don't have easy access to it now so I don't bother to drive 35 miles out of my way to buy it. It is more expensive but the longer life makes it ok.

If you are trying to figure out how to improve what you are running start by using the test strips to see what is going on. Also if you ever take off a part like thermostat housing and it has pitting the electrolysis is causing it and running a ground wire to that part will help the part stay good longer and that will keep the metal from contaminating the coolant and give it longer life (I know one more ground wire to worry about).
The other reason for pitting is the micro air pockets and instant boiling at that tiny location the water wetter is fighting first once you know it is grounded and you still notice more pitting increase quantity of water wetter.

Truck is jammed in garage where there is no good way to clean up the mess of flushing it is the only reason. Ill probably ly just pull it outside with the tractor & do it right. Pretty sure it is the big rig stuff though. Ill have to check. Thanks for the replies
