Helpin a freind with a 98 3500HD. Say the truck breaking up past 1700 rpm and lots of smoke. Idles ok. Has Code P0216. I have to go look at it later. Any ideas ? Grounds ? He said LP is working.

OK. Gonna get carple tunnel on this.
Here's what I found First off I get there and they had the D/S battery missing and hooked to jumper cables and the ground not connected to RS. I gave the mechanic working on it a quick tutorial on the importance of grounds.
That said this truck has more than one problem IMHO.
It has that setup like Matts with the dual tanks. Apparently very recently one of the drivers filled it with gasoline:eek: and yes it did run on it. The mechanic had done a compression test and #4 cyl(second back on P/S) is 300 PSI. All the rest 400 psi. No evidence of blowby or compression in teh crankcase or cooling system so that 100psi has to be going somewhere and being that the truck ran on gas I'm toying with a possible burnt valve. Also on that same bank there appears to be a massive ex leak form the ex manifold to head although I could not pinpoint it. The motor intermitently idles ok but any throttle and it breaks up and smokes horribly of unburnt fuel. The engine has 76k on it. It starts right up. I am thinking more than one problem here. Perhaps a burned valve from the gasoline cocktail and maybe the gas also wiped the OS or damaged the internals of the IP. Also the mechanic changed 3 inj on tha pass side bank to see if it made any difference. He has clear tubing on the return lines and I do see some air bubbles. I opened the T valve with truck idling and FP was good and no stall. I also gave him the address of this site. So What do you guys think ? Also I suggested he get some bi directional software suck as AE or carcode so we could kill cyls before he ripped the head off. 100 psi loss on one Cyl though to me is a seriuos problem. He said he did the test twice according to procedure. It has codes p0216 and p0231

Any tappet noise? Was wondering about plastic button failure limiting valve lift which in turn might limit comprssion

Well, This is where my thoughts are. what about the possiblity of the gasoline wiping out the advance piston on teh IP and the needles in the injs and the cyl that had low comp being washed out ? when the comp was done(I did not do the test). The truck idles too good to have that bad of a cyl. I'm starting to think his IP is toasted . They don't last long running on 93 octane.

lots of raw fuel smoke missing badly/uneven basically from 1200rpms up. Smoke gets worse with more RPMs Barely any smoke at idle. I don't know how long they ran it on gas. I can find out monday.
