Cleaning a used IP

I bought a used IP locally for very cheap. It has obviously been sitting for a while and has old diesel fuel still in it. It has a green tag on it and the guy says it has only been run for about 40k miles before he took it off after a wreck. I obviously need to clean it up before install. Any recommendations on how to proceed? Would anyone be interested in pictures? I am going over to the shop in a little while to get a good look at it and start cleaning.

Honestly, I'd have a good shop go thru it before I'd put it on. Spend the $$$ to get it right.

Just plant it on the engine and run it,the diesel in it will be gone in 1/2 min anyway.diesel fuel stays good for many years.
Having a shop go trough the pump first can cost as much as a brand new pump.

BTW,if that IP ran for only 40 k it should've been still fairly clean on the outside, nothing a bit of gas wouldn't take care of.
If it is very dirty i would not believe the 40 k

Opened it up. It's not diesel. They put something in it to preserve it since it was being stored. Red; smells kinda like and has consistency of race gas. The internals look good but the fuel shutoff solonoid is missing with the port open.

It wasn't that dirty, at least from a truck. It has a little rust from being in his shed for a while. He bought it to be a backup in case his died. But he sold the truck. At least that's the story.

I am thinking fuel stabilizer mixed with something.. I guess I will flush it a few times as best I can with some diesel and install it using my old fuel shutoff solonoid. I will clean up the pump and degrease the engine tomorrow. I hope to get to install it this weekend. If not, I should be able to next week. Work should slow down a bit by Monday.
I will also have to see if I can get a OPS relocator from Leroy before putting it back together.

looks like off road diesel to me. why are you replacing the one on there now? what are the numbers off the pump.

Offroad diesel is a possibity. I didn't think about that. I recognize the smell but can't place it, probably because I haven't touched it in about 15 years.

I am replacing it because I cannot get it to control the rev. Please look at my thread on IP or PCM issue and let me know if you can think of anything else I can do before I dive into this. I still have my buddy's Genisys Scanner so I can check anything suggested. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?32549-IP-or-PCM-issue

I will have to look at the numbers again tomorrow morning but 5288 seems to come to mind. It has been rebuilt at some point and the last 4 have been restamped.

Diesel smells like diesel, red or white it don't matter.
Please discard my advice, obviously there are issues with this IP if it has been sitting all these years without the FSO.

just read the other 2 threads and have nothing new to add. i am leaning to the IP being worn out. how many miles on the old pump? i have the number from the other post but can't find info on it.

I weighed what the local diesel guy charges to work on or even test the IP vs ordering a Dtech rebuild and pulled the trigger on the rebuild this morning. I will use this pump, that I have less than a core charge invested in, as the core and keep mine for educational purpose.:) Chock it up to lesson learned I guess. I don't want to go thru the trouble of installing it twice. My time is limited as is. I just had too much doubt with it.

According to the PO my old IP has over 170k miles on it, so I figured it is very likely worn out.

By the way, I had my buddy look, feel, smell the fluid and he agrees that it is offroad diesel.

Good choice. Looks like what used to be red dye diesel.

I was the 1st and the last to tear into a Olds v-6 diesel in our college engine class. Tear down an engine and put it back together then go and drop in the distributor on the test stand engine and get it to run.

The engine had sat for a very long time and the pi$$ yellow stuff that poured out of the IP was no longer diesel. There is probably still a yellow spot on the shop floor there. The engine was torn down as scrap after that class as I was the only one to open it in 20 years and my lab partner didn't even want to work on it, So I did it alone.

The Injectors and IP would have been toast from varnish build up and corrosion. Probably would have busted the IP drive shaft if it was ever spun up to pressure.

I believe you made a wise choice. Probably less expensive in the long run in both time and money. Now you will know exactly where you are, and will have a great baseline for the future.

.........By the way, I had my buddy look, feel, smell the fluid and he agrees that it is offroad diesel.
the only real true way to know is to taste it. LOL! i just went and got 20 gallons of the dyed stuff today. $3.29 a gallon.

^^^^got that right! I was glad it wasn't race gas! That stuff is mean on things..Rubber especially! The alcohol I use in my mod is even meaner to the fuel system and the engine. I have to fog it like a boat motor!

I think you made the right choice. Rebuilding it means not having to worry about it for a good while.

yeah. I don't know if it had additives or just old fuel but it smelled a lot stronger than 'normal' diesel. Doesn't matter now. I am just waiting on my rebuilt unit.
I will let you guys know how it goes.
