Cheap 6.2 Engine Opportunity

I have the opportunity to pick up 3 6.2's for cheap...

I would likely part 2 of them out and maybe save one for a future project.

What parts are in demand on these?

If one has '82 J code heads, (big valve) I'll buy 'em.

If you have a newer 6.2 block (early 90's) with a one-piece rear main seal, I'll take it too.

So there's a demand for ya. If they're cheap enough, snap 'em up.

Beware the blocks are prone to cracking and may be scrap metal.

Understood on the scrap part...it all depends on how "cheap" they turn out to be.

I am just getting into the Detroit Diesels, previously had 2 Duramax's and 2 Powerstrokes. I like my 6.5 so far - it's almost like working on an old 350 and much cheaper than my previous Diesels.

Find out what scrap iron goes for in your area.

Each engine weighs roughly 600-700 lbs.

Don't pay any more than that per engine.

If they let you pull the oil pan and heads to inspect the piston crowns, bores and the heads/main web for cracks, you can start talking about paying more if they're good.

Odds are with these old girls is that they're scrap. Most are cracked. Like 90%.

Local yards around here just yank 'em and send 'em out for scrap weight. They don't even bother testing them anymore they've had so many come back bad.

If they're military take outs, you may get away with some good ones, maybe not.

Make sure you find out where they came from, why they came out and how long they've been sitting......

Good steel and iron, like just 'engines' alone go for $300 a ton around here. So there ya go. 3 engines at 666 pounds each, 2000 pounds, $300.
