Chassis Saver paint and reducer pictured with a recommended piece of safety equipment. This paint is nearly as nasty as the original Imron. Wear gloves or you will wear black stained skin for two weeks. Serious stuff.

I wanted to get 'something' on the poor old '93 frame.

Also pictured is a spot on the GMT400 frame that is a problem in my opinion. Other frame lengths and duties may be set up/spaced differently.

The problem is the crossmember that is positioned exactly in the gap between the bed and cab. This collects and funnels all the crap to a spot on the frame where the rear cab mount bracket/front bed mount bracket is welded on. I've seen some trucks really ROT BAD here. Bad spot indeed.

I cut a window to hopefully keep the junk from collecting and to ease in flushing the crud out. This area on the bracket is not welded to the frame and will not degrade any structural strength. The bracket is 3/16 thick... I suppose be your own judge here...

What's the cost per gallon? That respirator couldn't be cheap either. Is this stuff comparable to POR15?

Yes it is comparable to POR. This product is a 'paint over rust' product. I will have to dig up a receipt for the quart cost. I do know it's very important that you use up any open container, quart, gallon or otherwise because once you crack the seal, the moisture in the air will start the curing process. You will destroy the can the second time you open it up. The stuff bonds like nothing I've seen.

From your description it sure sounds exactly like POR15.

What are the UV resistance characteristics?

Don

Rust treatment

This is what i've been using. It helps greatly. You have to paint over it. For prep you only have to get any loose flaky rust and any grease off it. Nice for small parts.

So you paint it over the "Rust"...........Wouldn't that lock the Cancer in, letting it to spread?

Louis, rust is an oxidation process, if you seal out the air it stops the rust. If it was easy to remove the rust I would as the appearance would be better.

Sun will gray it some. Will not affect how it works they claim.

...and sandblasting wasn't in the cards at this point in time so this is way better than nothing.

I personally haven't used POR15, but it is used a lot on the Toyota forum I frequent. From all the many reports on there you wire brush/scrape off all the loose rust and de-grease before painting. The POR15 then encapsulates the rust left on the surface, stopping the rust process. POR15 works better on the rough surface left by rust, or sand blasting, than on fresh clean smooth metal.

Barry, is the Permatex a spray on coating? That would make it easier to work with than POR15 or the Chassis Saver.

I'm shure the permatex isn't as good as por or the chassis saver but it really slows any rust. Yes it is a spray can. I think about $8 a can. It goes on clear and turns black on rust.

Too Bad I didn't see this first. That Chassis Saver is pure shit. it's made on Long Island. I painted the frames in my two oil trucks with it and the crap peeled off in SHEETS about 6 months later and it was a nightmare to reprep for POR15. POR15 is way better. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Chassis Saver is garbage. I used it on my Dually and it flaked off that two as soon as I hit it with a powerwasher and yes the chassis were cleaned and prepped properly. The stuff is garbage. And yes don't get it on your skin.

Thanks.

So, what you're saying is it should work fine for the rest of us.:D

Great minds think alike Leo...:rof:

I'll have to get a can of that spray on Barry posted as a prep. It's probably the same as their other stuff in a can with the same label (which I've used and like) but way more convenient. Would you then prime/paint like normal?

Yes, prime and paint as normal. I get it at a fleet farm store but I believe Napa has it also.
You guys shouldn't be so hard on Kenny:hihi::D

Hmm, oh well, guess I will wait and see how it holds up. Sorry you had a bad experience with CS.

I took the initiative and used a needle scaler for the bad spots then wire brushed the rest. Then power washed and let dry for a week. I got everything down to the 'tight rust'.

May I ask exactly how you did your prep?

What about good old Rustoleum? They sell a primer that neutralizes the rust. Then you can spray gloss black or flat black over that. Much simpler.

I use the permatex then hit it with the rustoleum rusty metal primer then rustoleum paint. Easy and cheap to touch up when it starts again.
