Bro In Law has a Chevy 2500 2001 with a Duramax with bad injectors and other engine problems. Can you swap a 6.5l for a Duramax? will it mount up and bolt to the tranny? from my short experience it seems the 6.5l is much cheaper to maintain and repair than the duramax. Bro in law got a quote of 4000 just to do the injectors for a start while you can get a rebuilt 6.5 less than that and a new long block for 6000 http://www . automotix.net/engines/65dieselengine.html

Completely different, common rail vs. distributor injection systems. Completely different electronics. Completely different turbo's, IDI vs DI...
The Duramax has better power and reliability. If you want to do a swap yourself, well, you already know how to do your own injectors. If not, sell the truck and buy an older and cheaper 6.5. (Purchase price that is.)

I have spent a small fortune of 6.5 engines and parts. The early Duramax had head gasket and injector issues. Not sure the 6.5 is cheaper than that or not.

A better way to go is swapping in a newer Duramax with the injectors outside the valve covers.

IMO learn how to swap your injectors on the Dmax. The blocks and rotating assemblies on a Dmax's are alot better than a 6.5l. Take the money saved by fixing the engine yourselves and buy an old 6.2-6.5 for a back up rig .

I'll tell him he'll have to suck it up and get it fixed or trade/sell it. I was considering it but I don't have that kind of discretionary cash. from what I read if he keeps driving it he'll damage the engine by thinning out the oil in the crankcase

The injectors are time consuming, but doable. You can buy a set for under $2K and do them yourself in a weekend if you have much mechanical ability.

I'll check the KBB and make him an offer, I don't need it for a primary vehicle.
