Coming home outside of Guadalajara I lost cruise control, then OD , then I was pretty much reduced to 1st gear. I got home (very slowly) and have codes of 36 IP pulse error long and 72 vehicle speed sensor circuit loss.. Just prior to this I had a weird stalling after cold starts but it ran fine after warming up.

Can anybody help me? Thanks gus

The 72 vehicle speed sensor would explain the trans acting up. Needs VSS to know what gear to be in.

Pulse error could be the IP optical sensor, possibly.

In the transfer case. Could be 'plugged' with metal shavings, which eludes to a different problem. Or some wiring got messed up under there. I 'think' there's a resistance value to check but I don't know the 'number'..(vss)

what transfer case do you have. some of the autotrack cases are know to have "pump rub" which will wear a hole in the side of the case. That could cause shavings to get into the VSS sensor. The manual cases are pretty much bulletproof.

Stalling after cold start and loss of cruise control is a sign of PMD failure in the making.

Check your grounds, make sure they are clean.

Is your PMD remotely mounted? Where?

I had lost my cruise for months, no codes, then it finally started stalling. After replacing the PMD, cruise started working again. Been fine since.

Almost sounds like 2 problems. A symptom of a failing PMD can be that the cruise control stops working. Along with that you had stalling. Could be a PMD?
Check that the connector is pluged in good at both vss on trans/tcase. Those sensors do go bad and they are cheap enough that you may try r&ring them. Whats fluid look/smell like on the stick? Drop pan and look for metal shavings.

Bumper mounted PMD. I did the grounds about 6 mos. ago.

I thought the PMD problems were heat related? The stalling only happened when stone cold. The fluid looks good. I`ll check that connector and probably just change out all the fluids and filter.

Well I checked the connector and it seemed fine. I then cleared the codes and took it for a drive. Its now driving and shifting perfectly normal and the cruize control is working. WTF???? I guess I`ll just see if it happens again before I do anything.

Thanks guys. gus
