My modified '99 passed the DMV inspection today (already passed smog) without any problems. Anyone who feared the CA smog regs after putting on an ATT, new tune or gutting their soot trap should fear no longer. Can't vouch for vehicles on drugs. They're looking for vehicles that blow heavy smoke acros the full range.

I was talking to a friend of mine who works for CARB and he said that the instructions still aren't clear for the diesel smog checks here in CA. He said those who pass now may not pass in 2 or 3 years once they get all the bugs out.

Why did you have to have a DMV inspection? I have never had to have them check any of my gassers. What's different now?

Most likely because it came from out of state. I had to have a inspection when I bought my sub from washington and registered it here in Commiefornia.

DHJunky is correct, I bought the truck out of state (Illinois). Per the DMV website they have to do a vehicle inspection checking for modifications, etc. They probably do not know what to look for as far as mods on a diesel. Wastegate vs non-wastegated turbo? Huh? Heath flash vs stock ECM? Only way for them to tell would be Tech Scan or a dyno. Now if you had a pane or nox set-up, that would be more obvious. For years I filled
Jerry cans with red dye at the marine fuel dock after coming in from fishing and used it in my '95. Do you think they're looking for red dye in a soccer mom suburban driving around socal?

Good to hear, I only fear that'll get worse when they get used to doing the diesels on a regular basis.

On the new ones sure, i'd think they'd tend to let the 6.5's just phase out.... along with the other older diesels, and focus on the newer 'clean diesels' and just turn the cheek on the older ones. Time will tell.

Maybe????? The new CA law states 1998 and newer diesels, but it may change in years to come to include some type of checking on the older diesels. I would say that they will change the date to inclued 94-up diesels as they were the first Gm dieseld to be electronically controlled as were some of the other manufacturers also.
one thing is for certain Ca is one of the largest eco test beds in this country, they dont want anything on the road if they had their way about it.

with this CA smog snap testing, it also allows Highway Patrol to do roadside testing and I know they check for red diesel/off highway diesel

:iamwithstupid: Just get busted with red dye in your tank(s) once. It will answer your question AND then you will be telling folks that things like murder are slightly less complicated then having red fuel when you get caught. They will miss the body in the 3rd seat if they find red fuel!

Yes your 'I have nothing better to do' cop or smog check point can check it on a soccer mom ride. The Duramax crowd has already made tuners even in the past used once a warranty void issue with their pickup mods. So what makes a Suburban different? They are used for farm labor vehicles and are known to use the wrong fuel from time to time. Vans are worse. You may think you are in the city but the amount of farming in CA...
