Today I was at Home Depot and when I went to start up my truck I heard the worst sound I have ever heard followed by the sound of bolts hitting the ground. :( I jumped outta my truck and looked for the bolts and found my stater hanging loose and F'ing bolts boke off right at the thread in the block. any body got any ideas on how to get the little buggers out? :confused:

You can usually wriggle them back out with a small screwdriver, or drill a small hole and use an easyout if they are somewhat tight.
do you have the bracket on the end of the starter? missing bracket is usually the cause for broken starter bolts.

I have posted this before but think it was on the old site. You need to immediatly go find your freindly neighborhood Snap ON man. He sells reverse drill easy outs. Don't buy cheap china made ones from sears etc, buy the snap ons. They self drill. Then take a center punch and careful punch the center of the bolt. Don't try to drill without doing this., if you drill off center your f'ed. Then once you sucessfully(hopefully) get the bolts out. your freindly neighborhood Stealer(if they are still in business) and buy two new bolts, and the bracket that supports the back of the starter which I guarantee you are missing which is why they broke in the first place.
Good Luck.

Update guys I went by the stealership yesterday to get new bolts and the bracket but they only had one bolt in stock and i had to order the other parts I went by the local hardware store and picked up a temp bolt (8.8 grade M10 1.5 pitch 110mm length) to get it back homeBy the way, Easyouts ARE NOT your friend, they break off in the pilot hole and you cant drill them out ( hardened high speed steel) , Luckily I managed to worm the bolts out using a screw driver. Anyways today the other bolt and bracket aill be at the stealer and i can put the propper fasteners in.

For you info:

Starter bolts- GM part # 15544950

Starter bracket (gm calls it just "brace") Gm part # 23502557

As with every thing else Common sense applies when it comes to using easy outs.
they wont work on rusted in or seized bolts.But will work on these starter bolts cause they aint rusted or seized,[just broken]

Left hand drill bits work great for removing broken bolts that are not stuck tight. Simply run your drill in reverse and usually the broken piece of bolt will spin right out. Center punching first is always a good idea, as is starting with a small pilot drill and then stepping to a larger one. Grainger is a good source for left hand drill bits.

GM parts direct has them for $8.76, MSRP is $14.77, here is a link;

I may need this bracket myself.

Is GM Parts Direct a site sponsor or something? They advertise great prices, then tack on shipping and a huge surcharge to everything. I was just wondering why everybody always recommends them. I use Parts Zone Online. Prices seem to be the same, and they only add reasonable shipping charges.

I just used them as an example because they were the first to pop up on a google search. I have never used them but, I have to say their begining prices are cheaper than a stealership!

Buy the Snap ON ones. They are worth the extra money. Cheap easys do exactly that, break off in the hole.
