Hi all,

something funny is happening on a 1996 K1500 : while driving, the truck brakes itself when turning left or turning right, just turning, not touching the brake pedal

We changed the power brake booster 2 months ago, all was OK... any idea?

Power steering boost is cross connecting to the brakes. I don't exactly know how that hydraulic circuit is isolated but I'd suspect a bad valve.

I'll bet on the brake hoses going from the steel lines to the calipers.
A similar problem on mine had the brake hose on 1 side acting as a 1-way, only releasing the caliper veerrry slowly if at all.
It started as intermittent and became worse as I rebuilt the calipers, flushed the hydroboost system and the brake system.
The disk, hub, and wheel got so hot it made the plastic holding the ABS sender to bubble. (still works though)

I wish I could have had the time to get braided Stainless over Teflon lines, but I was in Mexico at the time...

I reserve the right to be wrong.

The guy brought me the truck for a road test today. I completed steering fluid, as it was a bit low, start engine and turn steering wheel from left to right and vice.versa, several times, and then went for a test road...

The truck was running as a charm, absolutely no braking while turning... This makes me think about air in hydraulic circuit. May be the steering circuit wasn't properly bled when re-installing the brake booster 2 months ago?

If the return line from the hydroboost gets restricted it will cause the brakes to stay on. I guess it could even apply the brakes.
Turn the wheels to full lock as this will put the highest pressure on the system and should show problems with the brakes applying. The hydrobooster sees higher pressure with the wheels at full lock and may show you the bad valve.

Check the return line for a filter. A filter is a good idea, but, only on the steering box return line. Any restriction like a filter on the hydrobooster return line is a bad idea.

Have you tested the accumulator for proper function of brake boost with the engine off for 2 or more pedal applications?

Is this problem solved yet? If not, I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence but if it is a 4X4, is the transfer case in 4H or 4L? If so, the truck will naturally slow (brake) itself down due to the axles being locked up while turning. Just thought. Hope you have gotten it fixed!

That's actually a good point. Simple things first.
