Has anyone used the freeze plug heaters Kat's by Five Star Manufacturing? They are 600 watt and running about 1/4 the price of the ones NAPA carries.

I've used Kat's heaters on other (gas) vehicles with no problems. I can't really say anything about the one for the 6.5's specifically, though.

Is a 600W big enough? I put a 600W on my 484 and it takes 4 hours to get it to start and about one whole day to get it to start easy. Thats on a 50hp engine but it does have a large coolant capacity.

Whatever is in my 6.5 it works great, what size did GM put in them? I think I would want a 1200W.

So far I haven't found someone who stocks larger than 600 watt. Zerostart makes a 1000 watt one for our trucks but I haven't found a dealer.

Have also found OEM for less than NAPA is charging.

My stock one installed by the dealer was 600w. As you can see in my sig I put 2 1000w heaters in and with Delo 400 10/30 at -35 it will start in 1 1/2 hr. The heater on the pass side was a bear to install underneath the starter and I won't ever have to worry about it coming unplugged the starter brace pushes on it pretty hard.

Picked up a OEM one on e-prey for $20.

AK_Diesel where did you get your 1000 watt ones? I'm thinking about installing 2. Not that I need them but to have one as a spare if one dies. Won't get any easier than engine on engine stand.

Yeah but a record low day for me where I'm at would have you breaking out the shorts and flip flops. Can't remember the last time it was below 0F.
