Best programmer for an LLY

I have an LB7 and haven't followed the whole LLY thing...but a friend of mine has one and asked me what would be best...I have heard great things about the predator...but am Leary of recommending this to him because his truck is still in warranty...and with GM being able to tell if a program was loaded onto the ecm now...My gut tells me to recommend a harness box so little to no detection is possible...what say you LLY guys...

Predator v 2.02 is a great programmer. I ran one for nearly 3 years, tried all settings, and was pleased with it. My brother has an LLY and went with the Hypertech. He likes the moderate tunes that it has.

Harness boxes for the LLY do not seem to be as popular as handhelds. I know of a few guys who had the Edge, but the quality and dependability were spotty. All of them ended up with handhelds or EFI Live.

"Best" is always a loaded term. What does it mean? Not sure any of us know, and even if we know what "best" means for me, it won't necessarily meet your expectations.

I have a Predator v 2.0 - looking forward to upgrading it here soon to v 2.02 to pick up some additional oomph. But it can't change tunes on the fly. It is safe, and doesn't require you to switch harnesses or chips, and it works as a great diagnostic tool too. It's very easy to use - real hard to screw up too - so a relative novice can tune the daylights out of his truck without requiring a master's degree in auto mechanics. Once you're running one of the Predator tunes, changing from one to another is all of 2 minutes. Personally, I don't think they can be beat for the $$$.

Good luck...

i also here great things about the predator. that said, unless there is a major failure in the engine, and they suspect a tuner they wont even go into finding the matching cvn. plus the older ecm meaning the 01-07 classic dont have a memory for the programming history like the lmm ecm does. so if he flashed it back to stock they shouldn't know. plus the predator imo doesn't put out enough to brake things like some other handhelds. they did there homework and seems to me they tuned it right to make a nice tuner.

On my LBZ I started with a predator, then to a PPE hot+2, and now EFI live. I loved both programmers but if I had the chance to do it over would have saved the money I lost in reselling them and got efi first. JMO

It's really a fuel mileage issue we're dealing with...

I don't think he wants to fool with efi live...He mentioned the Bully Dog and I said I would check for him what everyone else had to say...I really thought there was a thread that said GM could catch the Calibration changes on older ecms...Like I said...he's still under warranty so I really don't want to suggest something and then if he gets busted on warranty work then I would feel bad...

His main issue is poor fuel mileage...13.5 hwy normal driving and 15hwy babying it... the 285's are partly to blame but I'm thinking a TxC CAI, Programmer and an exhaust would help a bit...(but with added power comes wanting to use that power)

I also told him to change his fuel filter and air filter and run some injector cleaner (BG44k) in a couple tanks and then continue with power service regularly after that...

I have exactly the same truck as you suggested, 05 LLY, 285's, 4" turbo back exhaust, Tx CAI and running a Hypertech on 3. Typically I net 15 1/2 running around work and back and a little over 19 on the expressway at around 70mph. I have a 9000# 32ft travel trailer that I pull and I get a tick over 11 pulling that.
Last year before the CAI and the exhaust I was getting a fair amount of fan while towing, I pulled the trailer all the way across MI last month and it came on once the entire trip. I used to get the fan engaging on most grades during the summer, the only time it came on this summer was at the end of the off ramp after I had sat through the light for a minute or so. The combo of the CAI and the exhaust was worth every penny.
I do have the programmer adjusted to account for the bigger tires so I am confident my numbers are accurate.

thanks Scott...

I've had many of tuners/programmers btw my 4 Dmaxes. I wanted a moderate, yet ballsy tuner, but my main concern with this truck was milage. I too did my research to find that the Diablosport Predator was the best choice for my LLY. I was/am VERY impressed with the power compared to the cheaper commercialized tuners that you can pick up at your local Afrozone. Bear in mind that the Pred.'s hp claims are RWHP vs FWHP like many others. Mileage seems to stay the same within the first 3 tunes, actually a little better with the second/third. I haven't calced in a while, but with my 285's I was seeing 15-16 and 21-22. I also like the EGR bypass feature for blocking. Simply bypass it through the tuner and no code.

do you still have to block the egr with that feature or does it just turn off disable the egr somehow?

You still block it to prevent the gasses from entering the intake. The tuner replaces the need to wire in a "Fingers Stick". With this option, it's easier and about $12 to block it.

On a side note, I've also heard good things about the PPE Std/Economy. And to add also, my Pred is the V2.02. Not sure if the 2.0's can do the EGR thing.

Okay...I'll pass that on...still don't know what to tell him a bout possible warranty issues though...that why I would probably have recommended the edge...then after the 5/100 warranty expires then use a loader...I would have recommended the Predator right away if warranty was not a concern...
