Bad water pump?

Today on the way home from work I noticed the coolant temp rising to 210 when on average it hangs between 190 -200. So when I got home I checked under the hood and behold, water was leaking out of the bottom of the water pump. I also noticed some oil there too. I'm not sure if the oil was already on the motor and the water just brought it back to life or not, but I'm going to assume the worst. I'm not sure if the culprit is just a bad water pump and or "metal plate" (I think theres an important metal plate seperating the pump and block) or, the past 2 mornings it's been around 40 to 50 degrees where im at and I didn't plug in the block heater. So the past 2 mornings when I went to start the truck up it sounded really rough for about 5 secs, it would even shutoff if I let off the gas, so I had to hold the gas to get it to fire and stay on. My friend said that he thinks the oil was too thick too get around where it needed to be, so I wonder if that has anything to do with water pump going bad.

could just be the gasket for the water pump. but Ace is right the weep holes are usually where it shows up. and alt or PS pump do recently? there share studs.

actually this morning the power steering belt came off its pulley so I had to loosen the bolts then re tighten them. And the pump is leaking on the same side the PS pump is on, do you think maybe just the nuts are loose? And I'm not sure what the WP is?

Get the belts off and spin the pump, the bearing is likell gone in the pump too.

You have four main bolts that go through the pump and the timing cover that go into coolant.

There are some bolts that go around the top of the metal plate above the pump and into the timing cover.

The oil fil has to come off too.

There are bolts below the pump that go into the timing cover as well. Be sure you get them all before you go getting rough with it.

The plate is held to the pump by some bolts on the inside of the plate.

Use some blue loctite on these when you put the plate on the new pump.

Clean everything good and use RTV Blue on both sides of the gaskets provided.

You should get a gasket that goes between the pump and the plate and another gasket that goes between the plate and the timing cover.

Goop the bolts that go into water with a little blue silicone and your good to go.

While you have the coolant drained down, its a grand time to change the T stat out for a fresh one.

A fresh lower and upper hose is not a bad idea either.

Good luck

A well finished job. I actually finished the other day and alls well, thanks for all the input.

And I think the reason the snout didn't leak first was because the fan had a blade that fell off and I guess that makes it unbalanced and the vibrations from the unbalanced fan spinning broke the pump. So actually that was a self inflicted wound there.

The fan shroud has a chunk missing out of it also, does anyone think that might cause an issue with getting too hot? I know that now with the new water pump the truck reaches 210* and before all this happened it rarely went to 205*. The differance between now and before is a different fan water, pump and the new piece of shroud missing.

the shroroud shouldn't make a big difference. when you changed the pump/fan did you change the clutch with it? new thermostat?

I thought the fan/clutch was one unit? I only changed the fan and pump no clutch.

I hope the rad isn't bad because it's only 4 -6 months old. Also the thermostat, I didn't change because its only about 4- 6 months old, should I have changed anyway?

the clutch is the finned section that bolts to the water pump. the do wear out but I'm wondering if it had more the way it was sitting. they're fluid filled so it does make a difference.

looking at mine I realized the clutch does look like part of the fan itself. the middle of the fan is actually the clutch.

Anybody have a field I can burn my truck in? haha... the damn thing has a new problem, I guess I could post a new thread but I don't want to out warm my welcome with all these problems.

As far as the fan goes I did notice the new one (its not brand new, it came with the drop in motor i bought 4-6 months ago) seems to spin a lot easier when I push it with my hand than the old one, so maybe the problem lies there.

ironically the more problems we hit the more we learn.

back to topic, if you still have your old on you may want to try swapping out the clutch and see if it makes a difference.
