Well since I was never able to fully resolve my problem here. I have decided to go with some type of external backup. I have a desk top and a wireless laptop. I am looking for suggestions for an external drive that will connect to my router via Ethernet cable. I need at least 1TB. Thanks

Tell me what router you are using....Complete model number. I will help you resolve this. After using Linksys and the issues I had I decided to go with Dlink. Good choice as I haven't had any issues with them. But i think we can get you router to work as you want it too.

OK Tim thanks. Just a small recap. The Network Magic was able to get the two PC's to see each other again but not all the time. They could see each other for like 20 minutes at a time then stop. You come back awhile later and they are working again. This was as close as working as it got. Without Network Magic they will not see each other at all.

Router: Linksys
Model: WRT54GS
Firmware Version: v7.2.07

That is a pretty decent router, the latest firmware is in place and it has a pretty good cpu speed. (240MHz) i am not sure of the ip address of it but if you want to start all other with this router and try a couple of things I would be willing to help you. Most of linksys routers use 198.162.1.1 as their IP. You can find this out by using network magic. Clink on the router in the map page and right click on the icon and left click view details. This will give you the option to view the ip address and provides a link to set up or manage device. what you will have to look for is something that will allow you to see the MAC Address on your computer and any other computer inyour network. You might see something that tells you the lease time. I am willing to bet that everything is in order, however since this router is running 2.4 GHz I am wondering if you have a cordless phone near by that is running on this freq and causing the router to hunt. The antenna on that model do not come off so it would be pretty hard to put remote antennas on like I did. (I put a 7db antenna on for more coverage area) look for something that might cause interferrence and try relocating the router if you think there is a issue. If not I would reset it and start all over setting it up and start using the basics that is on the CD. If you are not concerned about sharing the network maybe just don't worry about using WEP and see if that might be causing something. I will look at this thread when I can and if need be i can give you my cell number and you can call me and I can guide you thru some things.

BTW if your computer supports 1394 you can purchase a 1.5 T Freeagent external drive for about 100 bucks at office depot. (prices vary per location)

Tim, I checked out the only cordless phone we have and its operating on 900 MHz. I don't find anything that should cause interference.

I messed around for about an hour or so more then decided to hit the reset on the router and let Network Magic set it up due to EasyLink Advisor not being compatible with the firmware version I upgraded to.
I noticed Network Magic set the wireless up slightly different. The set up was WPA Personal and TKIP now it is WPA2 Personal and TKIP+AES. Not really sure what the difference is.

As of right now the lap top can see the desk top, I will see how long it lasts. I am still convinced its something the router has been doing. The IP address of my printer keeps being changed for some reason. The printer manufacturer tell me the router is doing it.

Everytime you reboot the router is has the power to reassign the IP adresses for the network, I have a older Minolta Laser Color Printer that did this all the time. I assigned a static IP for the printer that solved this problem. Lets deal with the 1st problem and then tackle the next...much easier to deal with.
I can explain the static issue for you. Before long you will be smarter at this.

On edit: That router model has been around for a few years, and even tho I don't like Linksys that much I will say that this is a decent home use router that should provide years of good service.

Just a thought on storage, guys... this is something that I'm really hot about lately...

http://mswhs.com/2009/11/18/exclusive-asus-home-server-the-ts-mini/

I was in a meeting with an ASUS rep a few weeks back and he demo'd one of these for me (had one set up in his house, on his home network - showed me his files (pics of his kids), his wife's files (her Christmas card list) and streamed out some of his home media (his kids playing driveway hockey)... all on MY laptop on a PUBLIC wifi connection, using MS Home Server authentication... it was pretty cool.

It just plugs into his home router.

As far as I know, this is brand-new stuff, and is only like $300-500, depending on configuration. I plan on looking into this further for myself in the spring when I see him again.

Sounds pretty cool, But a NAS could do the same thing couldn't it? Well you would have to expose it and use 3rd party software to access it......I think Dlink has something like this.
