Axle Wrap

Just asking a question here, but is there anything wrong with axle wrap? Does it take away from anything while driving? Does it hurt anything? Does it help anything?
 
In the Toyota Landcruiser crowd a popular mod for better ground clearance is changing the axles from stock spring under the axle (SUA) to spring over on top of the axle (SOA). When that is done axle wrap becomes more prominent and a serious problem. With this axle wrap comes broken pinion shafts and broken u-joints. The answer to this problem is installation of an anti-wrap bar.

I get it when I plow snow sometimes. It's the boom boom boom from the rear axle when it sometimes tries to search for traction. I clamped down the springs and have not had it since. The rear feels more planted to me now.
 
I Clamped the Front of the Spring Pack, at the Over-Load and Noticed a Huge Difference...in a Good way of course.

You'll Notice the Positive Effects in any Type of Driving: Braking, Acceleration, Cornering, and Straight Line Driving. The Truck just Feels Better.
 
Thank you for the responses. I was just curious if there were any benefits from axle wrap like a better ride. I guess it is just the opposite.
 
I believe Bud mentioned in the thread about spring clamps a while back that the ride is stiffer with them. I never got around to making mine and won't have time to until late fall but I want some before the snow flies...:eek:
 
Thanks the pics help a lot. We have what we call dead sand here in NC and what happens is u sink down in it a little and ur rear wheels on a dually will do a sorta wierd feeling thing and spin just a tiny amount and u r STUCK! Its not as bad with a single wheel truck. The front wheels sorta form a chock with the sand and it gets even worse if u r towing. Once it hops u better quit or it will spin and u will go down to the axles. If u quit quick enough u can put a wooden post between the duals and drive out but u gotta keep putting the posts between the duals as u go until u get thru the dead sand. If u see the dead sand coming u can gas it and sometimes plow ur way thru but sometimes u cant see it cause it will have some vegetation. This is not 4 wheeling this is driving across a hayfield or even a pasture or big open campground. I wonder if that spring clamp would keep the rear from hopping as the front end sinks down a little in the sand? 4 wheel drive doesnt help on a dually, u r basically stuck on top of the ground! I have even had it happen on private dirt roads around Colombia SC getting to some of the way off the main roads horse farms.
 
I am not sure Bill. I have read on here that guys that use their trucks to pull use the spring clamps on the front and rear of the springs to get a more "hooked up" feeling. I am going to make f sets of spring clamps. I will try the front 2 first. And then try all 4 and see how I like it. Should be a pretty cheap and simple experiment. :rof:
 
Keep me posted cause I can do grade 8 bolts and metal bars with holes drilled but my dually already bounces and rides like a lumber wagon without any weight on it, I dont want to make that worse.
 
I just made up some spring clamps like the photo showed. I will post picks tomorrow. I went with 1 1/2 inch by 3/8 inch flat stock. I originally started out with 3/8ths stainless bolts, but I snapped 3 of the 4 that I tightened today, so I think I will up the bolt size to 1/2 inch possibly Grade 8.

I guess I ate my Wheeties today! :rof:
 
Here is a photo of what I put together. I went with Grade 8 7/16ths by 4 inch.
