Aux power outlet vs cigarette socket

On the 06 trucks on the center console there are two power outlets. According the manual the one on the right is the cigarette plug but in examining them it is apparent that it is the AUX PWR. The one on the console for the backseat is just like it.

Problem is that I cannot determine what the fuse size is on any of the power outlets. There is one fuse on the panel at the end of the dash that is 10 amp. I think that is the cig lighter. The aux pwr device under the hood has no amp rating and there is only one of them. I would think that the two remaining outlets would be fused separately but I can't prove if they are nor what the amp rating is.

I would to plug in my 325 watt inverter vs have to run it from the battery. Anyone out there have any answers to this problem.

I had it connected directly to the battery in my old truck and was trying to prevent running wires to the battery again.

I really need to know what the amp rating for the aux outlets are and it is strange that the manual nor the part provides that info.

If I remember right the aux power under the hood is a much bigger circuit that would power something like an inbed fuel transfer pump. Have you checked the fuse panel on the left side of the dash, also there is another behind the brake pedal.

Heck, I'll go get the book for my LBZ and see if there is anything in it.

Page 601 in my Owner's Manual has the Instrument Panel Fuse Block diagram, if you look at the bottom right corner in the 2nd column to the left, 3rd row up there is one called AUX PWR 2 M/GATE. Also, underhood there is one called AUX PWR (not the one I was thinking of earlier, I was thinking of STUD #1) and another called CIG LTR. The first is to the upper left of the relay for the ECM, the second is directly below it. I am looking at page 604 at the Underhood Fuse Block diagram in my owner's manual.

On Page 228 in my O.M. I have Accessory Power Outlet(s), it says no more than 20A for that circuit.

I am not sure what year model LBZ manual you have but mine doesn't have those page numbers like that. Mine are ie. 5-156, etc.

I did find the items you were talking about but I still not sure what powers what so I guess I will have to pull fuses and see what is turned off. A couple of those fuses are a mystery as to what they might power.

Thanks for you help.

Do you actually draw 325 watts off the inverter? I really doubt the outlet has more than a 15 amp fuse. If you use less than 150 watts on the inverter then it should work ok. If the cig lighter is actually on a separate fuse from the aux plug then you could probably put 2 plugs on the inverter and plug into both and get close to the full 325 watts out of the inverter.

I don't use the inverter often. Run a laptop, recharge devices. I used to run a printer on it some but not likely now. The other thing is a 12v refrigeration cooler.

I wish they made the identity of the fuses and circuits easier. If I had an electrical schematic I could figure it out.

Some resolution to the question thanks to the following link and some testing.

http://www.gmupfitter.com/publicat/2004_BB/2003_Beyond_LD_Electric_CK.pdf

I pulled the AUX PWR fuse and found that it powers both (front and rear) of the center console outlets. The CIG LTR is the one on the left on the front console. It is 15 AMP and AUX fuse is 20 AMP. Both of these are on the under hood panel.

There is a fuse labeled AUV PWR 2 /MGATE that is not used. It is 20 AMP. This fuse is on the panel at the driver end of the dash.

Now to figure out the power requirements for my inverter.

It is probably somewhere around 90% efficient. 325 watts at 12v is about 27 amps. (just divide watts by volts to get amps) You should be able to get about 200 watts out of it without blowing the 20 amp fuse. You will want to have at least 12 gauge wire to the plug. If you do like I mentioned earlier about putting 2 plugs on it you have 35 amps combined between the 2 fuses which should take the full inverter rating but not the surge rating. (assuming it is 325 continuous and probably around 650w surge?)

Mystery solved. The inverter came with a cig ltr plug. After searching the web for info my brain finally kicked in gear. It came with a 15 amp fuse in the cig ltr plug. I used it plugged in to an adapter that was connected to the battery. Since it has a 15 amp fuse then I should be able to use any of the outlets without a problem. I never had a problem with the fuse blowing so I must have never overloaded it.

Thanks for all the input folks.

Glad you got it figured out. To answer your question though I was using the original Owner's Manual that came in my GMC, it has normal page numbers.

There was probably a label on it when you got it that said not to use over 150 watts with the cig liter plug. I had one that was like that.

That's possible. I couldn't find the literature that came with it. Thanks for all the input.
