Anything I need to know about removing the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid?

Is it as simple as disconnecting the wiring, then putting a socket on the raised hex part and unscrewing it? Install same as reverse? Any thread sealant? Torque values?

Also how should I remove the plunger? I think this is the cause of my truck dying a few seconds after start, so I've been told to try and remove the plunger.

Thanks for any tips!

You have it correct. I have done it several times, there is a spring under it so dont lose that, try not to get stuff in the IP, and insepct the O-ring on it before threading it back in.

Thank you....now any idea how to properly remove the plunger from the solenoid? I've pushed it in and out many times and it feels smooth and can't see where it would stick. But since I have it out I might as well take the plunger off and see if that helps with my issue.

Thanks again

Got it out!

Now is it ok to plug it in with the plunger removed?? Will it throw a code?

Going to fire it up shortly and see if it fixed my issue

I guess you found the snap ring that holds the plunger in. And you can plug it in without the plunger in it, it should not code, but if it does you can ignore it, there will be no impacts.

Hmmm, well preliminary results say that the FSS/ESO is NOT my problem. Initial start was rough, and I assume that was from a little air getting in from removing the FSS/ESO. After a little cranking she fired up, ran for a bit(20-30sec), then started to bog down and die just like she does on all cold starts now. Some more cranking and she started again and ran fine.

I've ordered a new fuel filter as that was initially recommended as the cause of my issue. I will start it again tomorrow cold and see if it dies as usual. Then I will pick up fuel filter and see if that fixes the issue.

I guess I worked backwards as the fuel filter should have been checked first, but oh well....thanks again for the help

Are you sure you don't have gelled fuel clinging to a gasoline sock on your replaced FSU?

Or some other clog in your tank?

Next time it stalls out, crack the bleeder and see if it HISSES INWARD, meaning vacuum, meaning IP is starving causing fuel vacuum then die when can't suck no more.

Try without Fuel cap

Check visual inspection of all fuel lines right up to the tank and behind the FFM.

I had(still have) the same problem, turns out it was the almighty PMD/FSD. I also tried changing the fuel filter and taking the plunger out of the fuel shutoff solenoid.

I am waiting for some cash inflow to replace it with a new unit. Mine acts up only on cold starts. It starts fine, will stall once or twice in the first 5 minutes, then run like a champ. If the FSD has a chance to cool off, it'll go through the stalling sequence again. Man I can't wait till next payday.

You might want to check the connection to the FSD extension cable. Some water/salt/dirt got into mine and broke the connection. It would not start most of the time. I cleaned the pins and now it runs better... Not perfect yet, but better.
