Just looking for scrap prices on about an 800lb lump of cast iron in the shape of a 6.5.

Canadian scrap prices would be best.

I might be buying one to try and salvage some heads and whatnot, but the block is scrap and won't know about the heads until I get them off, so I'm not willing to pay much more than scrap iron prices.

Anyone a scrapper out there?

:hihi:

right now in our area, the scrapper is giving 190.00 for a metric ton.... we know because we have been taking in loads from our burned shop clean-up... its kind of sad to send thousands of dollars of once-good stuff to the scrap...:(

You get about $75.00 for the block and heads minus the crankshaft. The crankshaft can sell for $75.00 alone if you have someone looking for just that. $100.00 is a fair price for a complete scrap engine if there is a possibility of good parts.

Heads are not worth the gamble in this case. Out of 3 engines that I have had blown up only one set of heads are free from visible cracks. I have not checked them further. Pre-cups can be changed as they are a source of cracks as well.

If I were to use 6.5 heads I would go with a set of new ones. I don't trust used springs or valves. But, because I am cheap I will use low mile 6.2 heads. But that 6.2 head use risks old springs breaking. Better than old high mile springs and valves...
And this is with the precup difference I would choose low mile 6.2 over high mile 6.5 heads. Tough choice.
