I just did ...

One of my Reds just crapped out and the truck was barely turning over the last two mornings (both were below 30*)... anyway I had the batteries checked and the drivers side was the culprit... I didn't want to replace just one and mine were just out of warranty...and at $169ea. times two, that was going to be a bit steep...

So I get to talking with the store manager and he tells me of these short dated batteries he just pulled from the shelf so I took a look and knew I would have to make some adjustments...A longer DS negative cable($12.99) was all it would take so I picked that up and brought the batteries home for the retrofit...keep in mind that these are marine deep cycle/starting batteries...so there are only top posts and the wing nut stud for connections...all I had to do was remove the side post screw and rubber shielding from around the eye part of the cable and the eyes slipped right over the stud and I torqued them down...with the exception that drivers side negative cable being replaced(that went pretty quick even though I took some time to reroute it from the original path that didn't make since to me)

So I got this great deal on two optima blues...

The Price?

$34.99 each

two batteries...all for much less than one replacement Red...

:partay:

Damn, at that Price, I woulda Bought them even if I didn't need them, then just Sell them.

But Sounds like you made out damn good. They'll do fine in your Truck.

...and you'll Like having the Wingnut Terminals if / when you Add Accessories.

Hello Paul,

Good luck. Do you have specs on the battery? CCA, reserve, Ah, dimensions? If you provide the model number, we can look it up...

Wow!!! Great score pal!
They do make side terminal to top post adapters too. I've used them in the past.

;) Just looked it up... better specs than I had originally thought(the Dmax only requires 600amps per battery according to autozones computer)

Optima 34M Blue Top

  • 12 Volt, 1000 MCA, 800CCA, 50AH
  • 110 Reserve Capacity
  • 10 x 6 7/8 x 7 13/16
  • MARINE STARTING BATTERY

due to the location of the top posts on the optima batteries(not sure if it's just the marine ones I'll have to check the red tops)

the top post adapters do not reach over the side of the battery far enough to use them...and if you try to turn the side post cables sideways to lay the cables on top, they are too wide and dont allow you enough bite on the top post for comforts sake...

I guess I'll take some pics tomorrow to show you guys what I did...I need two terminal covers so it won't be the final outcome...

How long did your OE's last? 3 sets of batteries in 10 years is not good. Our 05 is still on OE batteries...

Wow! What a deal for deep cycle batteries.

What does the 50AH mean?

I have a bad habit of accidentally leaving my cargo trailers lights on overnight... I had the red tops since 2004... with only one being replaced under warranty during that time... I don't think that is too bad...the AC delco's were replaced due to the passenger side leaking and you want to put a matched set in so I replaced both in 2004...

I kept the red tops this timeand turned in two small junk batteries...one is still good and I think I may be able to bring the other back...it's worth a shot.

Isn't it Amp-Hour, a measure of capacity? (Similar to a measure of torque: force-distance.)

That is correct. 50AH means the battery could supply 50 amps for one hour, or 1 amp for 50 hours etc.
